"I've been thinking about something you've said," says my physical therapist.
She's very chatty, so we broach a lot of topics in our sessions together. Today we're talking about donating blood and I casually drop being on the kidney donor list because I think I have already told her about it. I have not.
"You would really donate your kidney?" she asks. Sure, why not? If someone needs one, and I have two?
"Well," she says. "You do have a particular way of thinking about things."
And that's when she tells me she's been thinking about a comment I made in an earlier session about accepting the few who take advantage of a system if it means those who need the help can get it without jumping through too many, and often dehumanising or unnecessary, hoops. As a physical therapist, she's acquainted with both kinds of people, she told me last time. Someone who claims disability checks and simultaneously works full-time without declaring their income; and someone with an amputated arm needing to prove over and over that they cannot do two-handed work.
We reiterate the same points as before, and then I tell her about universal basic income and introduce the idea that we must move beyond capitalism. I don't know. Maybe she'll be thinking about that now.

As a reward,…
