JTTW Novel: Sun Wukong is ugly and terrifying. He has a thunder god’s mouth and he’s bald and he’s like three foot tall-

Media and Artists: Make. Him. GORGEOUS.
Redraw of a 1986 Sun Wukong shot I really liked
[ID: An illustration of Sun Wukong scratching his cheek and looking up and off to the right side. Across his shoulder is draped a blue robe with a pink and white stripe. Next to him is a screencap of the frame referenced from the 1986 Journey to the West show, with 1986 SWK in the same pose and outfit. The screencap is captioned "1986 JTTW Episode 1- around 21:15." I love these two
"How could it still be on your head?"

Something that I realized about JTTW is…
Erlang Shen wasn’t one of the deities who tried to figure out which one was the Six Eared Macaque and which one was Sun Wukong.
He literally has a heavenly eye that can see through illusions. And you’re telling me NO ONE thought to ask him for help?!
My JianKong mind likes to imagine the scenario if Erlang was visited by Wukong like this:
Erlang: ..Hmmm. You! (points to real Wukong) Come over here.
Wukong: (walks over)
Erlang: (hugs him)
Erlang: Ok, this is the real one. Now, I’ll kill the fake one for you, Great Sage.
Six Ears: Wait what?! But you haven’t even hugged ME yet! How do you know I’m the fake one without testing both of us!? That’s not fair!
Erlang: I don’t need to. I clocked your sorry, fake *ss the moment you stepped into this space.
Wukong: Hm? Wait, if you already knew I was the real one, why did you ask me to come closer?
Erlang: …I just wanted to hug you.
Peak comedy and dynamic is how instead of the meme of “The gorgeous goddess husband/wife and their rat partner”, for JianKong it’s the opposite of what people assume of that meme.
Like instead of the “supposed” idea of “Wow how did the stinky 4-5 foot tall monkey manage to pull the absolute babe that is Erlang Shen (which come on if you have eyes, just LOOK at that man. He’s objectively GORGEOUS), people in their universe actually thinks the opposite.
It’s “Wow, how did Erlang Shen manage to pull the absolute BABE that is Sun Wukong?”
They think yeah, Erlang Shen is conventionally attractive. But Sun Wukong? Now THAT’S a different story.
And sure, it might be very inaccurate to assume that the immortals would think that way. But the MORTALS? They GET IT.
And his subjects too. They have the mindset of “Wow, our king has a really strange type. He’s dating beneath his league choosing to be with that bald monkey with three eyes. But whatever makes our Beautiful Monkey King happy is fine I guess.”
Think about it. If you aren’t an absolute nerd about Chinese mythology (ahem. Yes, I’m guilty) or you haven’t grown up with it, then you most likely don’t know who Erlang Shen is. Sun Wukong is the superstar here. His charisma and charm has lasted for literal CENTURIES. It doesn’t matter if you think he’s ugly. He’s objectively charming.
Idk. This was written in like the middle of the night. I just thought it was funny and it’s kinda related to my old work titled “The Pranks We Made Along The Way.”
Rant over :)
