I have been fostering 3 kitties, 1 black and 2 tuxedos. They have done wonders for my broken heart after having had to put down my grumpy old lady cat
I hear you. I miss my grumpy, finicky kitty.
But. Also OMG THE KITTENS ARE SO SNUGGLY. Penelope would occasionally deign to sit sort of on you or maybe next to you, usually right as you’ve decided that you really, really can’t wait any longer to get up and pee. And that’s fine, she was entitled to set her own boundaries and whatnot, and we loved her dearly.
But the purring and snuggles we’ve been getting from these babies are the BEST THING EVER.
And Penelope just. Wasn’t interested in any enrichment we tried to give her. Nice cat toys? Nah. Expensive cat tower that would let her get away from the tiny humans? No thanks. But the kittens love the toys, love the cat tower, and it’s great. It gives me hope that maybe we can actually keep them inside, which will be so much better for their health. (They’re delicate, like little Victorian ladies.)
The only weird thing they have in common with Penelope (so far) is that Raven at least would rather eat the dog food than her own kibble. Because of course.
None of this is to knock my Penelope. It’s almost a point of pride that the majority of my pets end up being complete and utter weirdos. It’s a trait I inherited from my mom, I think. Something about us just says “we’re all weird here and that’s OK,” I guess. But it’s also nice to have kitties who are actually interested in some of the traditional cat behaviors that are fun.
They’re perfect and I love them, is what I’m saying, even though I have some new scratches on my hands (all accidents, except for the ones from my dog’s teeth because he thought it was raining outside and was hiding under the bed to avoid being walked; like I said, I get the weirdos) and they keep jumping on the table.
tl;dr Kittens are the BEST. So are crotchety old weirdo cats, but a purring kitty on your chest is one of the best things in the whole damn world.
