rmbr when 1D covered Use Somebody, I feel like we don’t talk about this enough, harry’s voice was still so so deep, louis carrying the ohohohs all by himself despite all the boys singing along and don’t get me started on HIS SOLO, niall’s voice all raspy and perfect which really fucks me up with that blond baby face, liam hyping up everyone and his “i’m ready nows” like hell nO i wasN’T LEEYUM and zayn’s already nailing those high notes and smashing the performance all around, like

Hi there. I don’t really send anons but I see your response is always extensive and unbiased. Do you think OT4 has talked about which 1D songs they will cover when they go solo? I am wondering why Harry who is the more widely known (no offense to the others) chose WMYB and SOML, 2 of their most popular singles. While Niall got Fireproof which was never a single I believe and Louis, LBD, known only to the fandom/concert goers. I think Liam will maybe take BSE but I dunno really. 😊

I do think they’ve discussed 1D covers amongst themselves, to prevent covering the same songs, and also to own their boyband past. Most people probably expected these boys to leave 1D far behind as soon as their solo careers started. I think it’s a way to connect their current music to the past, to show that the two aren’t so different, that all music has the same bones.

When Harry covered Stockholm Syndrome and WMYB, my thought was that he was co-writer on SS, and WMYB was the first One Direction hit, and it was a way of him embracing, rather than rejecting, his boyband legacy. The way he covered WMYB was to transform it from a boyband love song/ crush song to an rock anthem of self-empowerment, which I felt was great. 

Could Harry’s “first dibs” have been because of favoritism by Sony, because he’s the “biggest star”? Who knows. I don’t think Niall, Liam, or Louis would concede to that. I think they’re all working as hard as they can to be the biggest star, and they are probably thinking of competition more along the lines of top 5 rather than each other. 

Niall’s cover of Fool’s Gold was equally great, and beautiful. His voice has really improved since Four was released (and the production on his album cleaner and clearer than Four). I loved that he recorded it for Spotify. I think Fool’s Gold (a favorite song) fits in with the tone and mood of Flicker. It wouldn’t have fitted in as well with Harry’s concert. 

I mentioned before that I think Louis chose LBD because its musicality fits in with his current pop-punk sound. Other 1D songs in the same vein include Midnight Memories, Girl Almighty, No Control. Of all of them, No Control makes the most sense to cover, because Louis had the most involvement in it. 

Liam’s album makes me very curious; I am really looking forward to hearing it, because he has said that some of the album is balladic or lyrical, rather than dance-focused. Liam can cover anything and make it his own, really; he is so talented and his voice such a fantastic instrument. I would love to hear him sing Through the Dark, Better Than Words, Change My Mind, Night Changes.
