The albatross x dancing with our hands tied

Aaaaaah this is another wonderful thematic parallel!

First of all: Girl and Her Guitar Doing A Bit At A Coffee House. I LOVE THE WAY SHE SOUNDS IN THIS. She's adding a little country twang/bluesy drawl to The Albatross and I am liiiiiiiiiiiiiiving! I enjoy The Albatross on the album, but I absolutely love it performed this way. Her little strummy strums make me so happy, especially as she builds to them at the end of the song.

The theme is: I'd kiss you as the lights went out, swaying as the room burned down, I'd hold you as the water rushes in, and when that sky rains fire on you and you're persona non grata, I'll tell you how I've been there too and that none of it matters.

This is suuuuuuuuuuch a good story, and I've come to realize over the last few months that Dancing With Our Hands Tied kind of plays into so many of the songs on TTPD, but that is a whole other discussion.

When you think about it, both songs kind of tell the same story: falling in love amidst chaos, and the pressures from the outside world trying to throw a wrench in it.

In The Albatross, the outside forces warn the lover to stay away from her, but at first he stands firm and shoots them down, e.g. ignores/fights back against the people telling him this is a bad idea-- which is echoed in Dancing With Our Hands Tied and People started talking, putting us through our paces / You said there was nothing in the world that could stop it, i.e. outsiders tried to put down what they had, but he stood up to them because they couldn't stop the way he felt for her.

In both songs, she wants to protect her lover from the oncoming storm. Whether it's spreading her wings like a parachute or holding him as the water rushes in, she wants to keep them close as the world closes around them, because that is their salvation. And it's really interesting to go from DWOHT where she's riddled with anxiety about what will happen to them, but dancing through it anyway because it was worth the fight, to The Albatross where she knows they're surrounded on all fronts, but she knows how to weather the storm if he'll let her guide them.

I also like the connection between I knew there was no one in the world who could take it / I had a bad feeling and I'm the life you chose and all this terrible danger. Just the idea of fearing that this person couldn't take the heat, to knowing that they chose this life with you, knowing full well what it would entail.

An interesting lyric parallel I just noticed between the two songs: And darling, you had turned my bed into a sacred oasis // You were sleeping soundly when they dragged you from your bed and I tried to warn you about them

This was a great trip down memory lane, anon! Loved this one.
