Three weeks in, and the first years already had their first exam. It seemed to sneak up on us. One day we were struggling to stay afloat through the onslaught of information, and the next we were being graded on our newly learned anatomy knowledge. It was a struggle to survive for many of us. The goal was to pass, not to excel, and in anatomy, that can be quite the achievement.
Anatomy is like a hurricane, especially for those who were so unfortunate as to have never taken it before. I can’t tell you how glad I was to have taken anatomy as an undergraduate—even though vet school anatomy is in greater depth, it’s awfully nice to have a strong basis. Between the lectures about the theory of body structures and the 6 weekly hours of dissection, there is a lot of information to study. Your job is only complicated if you are unlucky enough to receive a fatty cadaver, as you have to spend so much of your dissection time cleaning. Trust me, if you are taking anatomy for the first time, you’re going to spend many of your weekend hours leaning over your specimen, your eyes burning from the formaldehyde.
Suddenly, the first test is upon you, and you are drowning in the origins, insertions, and actions of the muscles of an animal body. It’s not enough to just be able to identify the structures, you have to know what they do, what clinical signs you would see if something went wrong, and how to identify things on radiographs. For a first year also taking physiology, histology, immunology, and animal behavior, that’s a lot to learn for one class.
My heart was pounding as I took my seat for the written portion of the exam. It’s always that way for the first test with a certain professor—the worst part for me is not knowing what to expect in the way of questions and difficulty. No matter how much I study, the first test of a class always makes me so nervous.
Luckily, the written portion seemed on par with my previous anatomy test, so the difficulty did not catch me by surprise. The first test of vet school was going better than I expected!
The lab portion followed. Thirty-five stations of specimens and radiographs, and we not only had to identify the structures, but also determine their significance and extrapolate clinical signs based on damage to the structures. Strangely, it was almost fun, because it felt like we were thinking like real doctors.
Once the first test was under our belts, we felt a little more like vet students. We had survived the first crunch period of the year, and really we were no worse for the wear. Somehow, we are all going to be okay after all. We are all going to pass, and we are all going to be veterinarians.
