How do 200 level courses work? Are you allowed to take them your first semester?
Hey! Great question!
My answer to this is, it really depends on the specific class you’d like to take and whether or not you’ve taken AP classes or their equivalents and the scores you got for them (IB, A-levels, College courses). Many of the 200 level courses I’ve taken in the Psychology, Biology and Chemistry departments require prerequisites, and that usually prevents first years from taking it. For example, for BIO 230 Genetics, you need to have taken BIO 130(154), BIO 132(150), or 152 or permission of the instructor (taken from the Smith College Course Catalog). I did not have to take the introductory Bio courses because I got a good enough score for IB Biology that could be substituted as a prerequisite for the class. I know some first years in the class right now who did this too!
Some 200 level classes in the Psych department count as Colloquiums. These classes are usually capped at 25, and priority is given to class year (senior, junior, sophomores, then first years), which . might lower your chances of getting in your first semester, even if you have an Intro to Psych prerequisite. The class is more discussion based and there’s a lot of reading involved, but, both my Psych colloquiums don’t have final exams (just a final paper for one).
My advice would be to look through the catalog I linked above to see if the classes you want to take have prerequisites or not. You also get a Liberal Arts Advisor when you come to Smith who will help you sort out any of the requirements you need and plan which classes you want to take!

The specific examples like batting averages and the Berkeley gender bias case are a good place to start.

Please don't be offended
I don't think I can sit in the 400-level ever again. My season tickets are in the 200-level, so I'm used to being closer to the first baseline. In addition, the crowd is drastically different than those in the Terrace seats.
On Wednesday, I went to the day game of the Brewers v. Rays for a special "2 for $24" promotion. I received a free Summerfest shirt, ticket, and 400-level seat for that much. We were in section 423, row 18. I haven't sat in the Terrace in so long. Let me just say that there are no smelly women in the 200-level and little kids that disobey their parents and kick my seat anyway.
END RANT.
