Today is October 17, 2018, which means it is the 14th anniversary of Game 4 of the 2004 American League Championship Series AKA the beginning of the greatest comeback in baseball (and possibly all of American sports) history.

In a best-of-seven series, the Red Sox were 0-3 to their most hated rivals, the New York Yankees, with a humiliating 19-8 loss in Game 3 the previous night. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the score was 4-3, Mariano Riviera (easily the greatest closing pitcher in the game's history) was on the mound, and the Sox were three outs away from being swept and eliminated from the postseason.

Then Kevin Millar had a lead off walk, and Dave Roberts replaced him to pinch run.

Everyone knew Roberts was going to try to steal second base. Everyone.

Rivieria attempted to pick off Roberts multiple times, but Roberts safely got back to first every time - including the last where he came a hairs breadth away from being tagged out.

And then Riviera (finally) threw to Bill Mueller and Dave Roberts stole second.

Mueller then hit a single, and Roberts scored all the way from second to tie the game and send the night into extra innings. And in the bottom of the twelfth, David Ortiz hit a two-run walk off home run to win the game and force Game 5, beginning just sixteen hours later.
