Canary Islands separatist flags being flown in a manifestation for Canary independence from Spain in 2010.
from /r/vexillology Top comment: I don't know the context of this specific protest but I've researched the Canarian independence movement and, while interesting, it has always been a tiny minority of opinions and remains so. This flag was created by proponents of independence (MPAIAC) but nowadays is much more used as a symbol of Canarian identity, not necessarily (and usually without) separatist tendencies. In fact, many people who wave it don't really know or consider the independence connotations of the flag. Canarian separatist movements failed to gain traction for a number of reasons, among them the fact that, although the Canaries have their own culture and identity, they don't have their own idea of a 'nation'. The pre-European inhabitants, the *guanches*, were completely wiped out - all the remains are genetic traces and some place names and a few folk stories. There isn't a Canarian language (there is a dialect) or a historical precedent for independence, like in Catalonia. There was actually a very small armed campaign, mainly minor bombings with few casualties. One time, MPAIAC planted a bomb in Gran Canaria airport, causing planes to be diverted to Tenerife airport. The increased load on the air traffic controllers combined with foggy conditions led to the [deadliest incident in aviation history](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenerife_airport_disaster) when two planes collided on the runway, which is a pretty significant stain on Canarian nationalism. The leader, Antonio Cubillo, was victim of an attempted assassination by Spanish government agents in Algiers, which left him and the movement crippled. Cubillo himself was a fascinating guy who was a great speaker. This all said, if there was a strong modern attempt for an independent Canaries, as long as they had a solid vision they would 100% get my support. I'm neither Canarian nor Spanish but I did live in Gran Canaria and think it is an amazing archipelago that deserves more recognition beyond being a tourist hotspot.
