Watch the Basket Shanahan
"Behold the fool saith , 'Put not all thine eggs in the one basket'; but the wise man saith, 'Put all your eggs in the one basket and -- WATCH THAT BASKET." --Mark Twain
Rumors are swirling that the Redskins are willing to give up the "King's Ransom" to get the Rams' 2nd Overall pick to select RG3. Reports have the Skinz giving up this year's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks IN ADDITION TO next year's 1st round pick.
Frankly, if I'm Bruce Almighty and ShanTHEman I pull out my pen and ask Jeff Fisher where I need to sign. What's it worth to get your QB for the next decade? To get a face to your faceless franchise? What would you give up for a Michael Vick with football smarts, throwing accuracy, leadership, and charisma?
Would you give up a 1st and 3rd this year and a 2nd next year for a Heisman trophy winner? What if I told you that Heisman trophy winner won it 10years ago? Well...that is what the Raiders gave up for 32-year old (tostitos, salsa, and queso eating) retired, Carson Palmer and the soon-to-be-forgotten Terrelle Pryor.
Ok sure that's Oakland and they do stupid things. But how about a 1st and 3rd this year and a 1st and 5th next? What if it was for selecting Eli Manning? In that epic deal that had daddy Manning complaining about the San Diego way, the Chargers ended up with Philip Rivers, Shawne Merriman, Nate Kaeding, and Roman Oben (started at Left Tackle). All the Giants got were 2 Super Bowl Rings in 4 years.
...And the list goes on. Michael Vick for four draft picks and Tim Dwight (My third favorite white WR behind Wayne Chrebet and Joe Jurevicious); Julio Jones for 6 draft picks; Ricky Williams for EVERY SINGLE NEW ORLEANS DRAFT PICK in 1999....and a 1st and 3rd in 2000 (In case you were wondering that's how the Redskins picked #2 and #3 overall in the 2000 draft selecting LaVar and Chris Samuels respectively).
Each one of these deals were insanely pricey and only Vick and Eli seemed to have panned out for their teams. But to put this proposed Redskins deal into perspective.... Would you trade Trent Williams, Ryan Kerrigan, Jarvis Jenkins, and Leonard Hankerson for RG3, who could be your first legitimate QB threat since Sonny Jurgensen?!? Silverback and Kerrigan look like they will meet expectations but Jarvis and HankTimes85 (that's his Playstation user ID, play him in Madden sometime) got hit with the unfortunate injury bug. This aids my point even further that you never really know what you're going to get in the "box o' chocolates" that is the NFL draft. But if a once in a decade talent like Sir Robert Griffin the Third presents itself you better do what you can to get him.
Every single year there are Trent Williams' and Ryan Kerrigans'. But there is a reason we had to wait over a decade to see a Vick-like QB that may actually be able to throw into a hanging tire every now and then. PULL THE TRIGGER, Mr. Snyder! TRADE 3 FIRST ROUND PICKS (if you must)! GET RG3 to DC BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY! THE THIRD IS THE WORD!!!
