On this day… 17th of November
That’s a big step up from prison food that. So why are you glaring at it?
17-Nov-2015
I finally got around to reading that Fader article. It seemed to be trying to be all things. It was insightful yet vague on actual details. It was critical and honest in some aspects, and was towing the standard company line on others. They were definitely pushing the Solo Zayn Narrative, but starting to seed the redemption arc of a ot4/ot5 reunion, through Liam it appears. There seemed to be a battle between what he wanted to say and what was printed.
I think there is enough in the article that news sites can report on their own angle (I have seen some of the headlines in the DM) and ignore the rest of it. The article touched on Zayn’s views on leaving the band, ending Zerrie, rumours of interpersonal relationships (*Why was this even asked except to get yet another denial from someone outside the relationship since those involved seem incapable of addressing it in a satisfactory way*), communication with the band in general (only Liam mentioned?!? seems to contradict what the other boys have said recently), his new album / music (no clear date on release it seems), his family, cultural influences and how he sees his place as a representative of that culture. I think it was meant to be his voice, yet still constrained by the media machine that he claims to resent.
I don’t know what the future holds for Zayn, and whether this new music will ever see the light of day (he seems to be unsure of the direction of his musical style and this may jar on a solo album if it is too inconsistent). I’m not overly excited about the music demo in the background of the video that accompanied the article, but will be interested in what else he releases. Whatever happens, I think the fans are in for a bumpy ride over the next 6-12 months - this album is going to be judged rather harshly if it doesn’t live up to the hype behind it, even if Zayn doesn’t care about the quantities of albums sold. His label and the media will care. I wish Zayn happiness and success for whatever the future holds.
