Here are the costumes I did in 2016! I’d like to start with a massive thanks to the photographers of these pics: Mumei, Trung Do, and Alexemplary, without whom I wouldn’t look nearly as good.

2016 was, overall, bad for everyone and I was no exception. Because of this, I spent a lot of time working on costumes as an escape. I’ve made some pretty impressive things this year (a prime example being Glinda, though it feels years ago that I was working on that), but I definitely feel stuck in a rut of mediocrity. Yes, my costumes look pretty cool at a glance but they’re missing a lot in patterning and technique. Perhaps it’s just that my progress in skill has slowed since my first couple years where I was starting from next to no knowledge of sewing (the skill/perception learning discepancy that artists experience).

Since 2016 is coming to a close and I won’t be debuting anything new for the rest of the year, here’s a graphic of all my cosplays that were new in 2016

These seem to fall into two categories: suits and retro sexy girls. Everyone but Pearl is from an older series, as well. Interesting. I also doubled the number of anime/manga characters I’ve done, which is unusual for me.

2016 was overall a pretty good year for cosplaying and cons for me. A year ago, if you had told me about some of the events of 2016, I wouldn’t have believed you -- I cosplayed bikini armor? From an ecchi series?? -- but even though I only debuted 6 cosplays, I feel like I did a lot this year. Nothing really huge and showy like another Ultimecia, but I’m really proud of a lot of what I did here in upping my tailoring skills, wigmaking (my second Pearl wig debuted this year as well as my Juri wig), and prop and armor game, including my first heavily armored cosplay and my first time working with Worbla. I can’t believe 2016 is almost over. It feels like I was just making Juri the other day, not a full year ago.

I got into new series (Rose of Versailles), did two cosplays from my current main fandom (Utena), stepped out of my comfort zone (Mink) and learned a LOT in doing so, did a dream cosplay from years back (Angela), and whipped together a cosplay for a show updating (Pearl). I also entered two contests, which is something I want to continue to do in the future, went to AX for the first time in 13 years, expanded my panels, made new friends, and had overall a great time.

Favorite costume of the year: Juri (Oscar is a close second) Favorite item of the year: tossup between Angela staff and Juri wig (though my new Pearl wig is also on point, pun intended) Favorite con of the year: AOD is the surprise winner here Favorite cosplay injury of the year: Cutting myself so badly on Mink’s coneboobs that I bled

Here’s hoping for even bigger and better things in 2017!
