The Resistance is working. America is working.
Gerrymandering in Virginia - along with reproductive rights, gun control, and other issues - will be determined by the governor’s race on Tuesday, November 7, 2017.
Republican contender Ed Gillespie ran a racist ad campaign falsely linking illegal immigrants to gang violence in sanctuary cities (Virginia does not have any sanctuary cities, and existing sanctuary cities in other states are actually safer than other cities). He is a Trump supporter who opposes Obamacare, called birth control a “sin,” and believes abortion should be banned. Responding to a question about gun control, he claimed that Virginia has universal background checks, which is not true.
Ed Gillespie invented the current GOP strategy for gerrymandering that has been widely used since 2010. If he wins, Republicans would be solely responsible for redistricting in Virginia - which Democrats would not be able to change until 2031.
Democratic candidate Ralph Northam must win this election. Voters in Virginia deserve a candidate who supports reproductive rights, healthcare, gun control, and more.
Take action right now to help Democrats win in VA:
1. Go to indivisible.org/virginia or flippable.org to see how you can help from out of state.
2. Text NORTHAM to 44939 to take action on voting rights with Let America Vote.
3. if you live in Virginia, visit iwillvote.com/va to find your polling place or sign up to get out the vote here.
As we celebrate Danica Roem’s victory in Virginia, we must not forget Andrea Jenkins’ win in Minneapolis. Both of them have set precedents, and both of them need to be recognized for it.
It’s Election Day tomorrow (November 7th) in the US (aka my third favorite day of the year) and even though it isn’t midterms or the presidential, it’s still really important to get out there and vote! Think of it this way: Local elections are just as if not more important than the bigger ones because you have to live where you live, and they’re in charge; why wouldn’t you want to have a say in that?
