Throw Back Thursday to exactly two years ago (December 3rd, 2018) when I was about two months into growing out my mohawk. I was just thinking the other day that it’s been ages since I posted a picture of myself where I wasn’t wearing a wig, so here’s a pic with my real hair -- albeit a hairstyle I no longer have, lol.
In the months following this, I gritted my teeth through the awkward grow-out stages until I could get a pixie cut, which eventually gave way to more awkward grow-out stages. Finally in February 2020 I was able to get it cut into a blunt bob, all one length, right about jaw level. My plan was for that to be my last haircut for awhile, on my way towards growing my hair out long again (following the Great And Horrible Medically Necessary Head Shaving Of 2017, which this mohawk style was itself a pitstop on the path to growing my hair back out from) aaaand then naturally, about two weeks after I got that last haircut, California and pretty much everywhere else went into pandemic lockdown, so I wouldn’t have been able to get my hair cut again, anyway. It’s just been growing steadily since, it’s a little below my collarbone now, and I’ve gotten back into the habit of “dusting” my split ends like I did when I wore it really long. It’s also lightened up a fair bit since this photo, with exposure to the sun over a couple of summers.
Since I started growing my mohawk back out in the fall of 2018, my goal has been to have my hair as close to “long” again as I can by the time I turn 40. At times that countdown to 40 is the only thing that’s kept me from breaking during an awkward grow-out phase and chopping it back into a shorter hairstyle. Only about two and a half months left to go, and while it’ll still be several inches short of where it was before I shaved it off in 2017, it’s already at the point where I can get it into buns and twists and such again, and I’m looking forward to heading into my 40s with my long hair goals decidedly on the horizon.
