Happy 2024 Fic Challenge!

@jandjsalmon and I are here with the new fic reading challenge for 2024! Heck yeah! Jandy did most of the work this year, I'll be honest, and the new challenge looks great!

For the uninitiated, basically there's a bunch of tasks to complete as you read fanfiction over the year. For example, read x number of authors, read a new ship, read a fic with x in the title, etc.! It can be a fun way to challenge yourself, or to help you read more, or to discover new things you might never have tried!

But here, without further ado...

Remember that for any of these spreadsheets, you need to 'make a copy' for your own use. Otherwise you won't be able to edit anything!

We have a pinned post with all the important links, but I'll include a couple here for ease of access.

We also have completion badges every year, and here are last year's as an example. (They are adorable.)

And, of course, there are rules (with a helpful FAQ).

Anyone is welcome to join, even if you don't hang out with us in the Discord! And the whole challenge is done on the honour system. You say you completed Extreme Mode? I ain't checking that out! :P

2024 has come to an end! (And a bit of change.)

Hi everyone, thanks to all who participated to whatever degree you wished! Special thanks to those of the Discord group who have simply been awesome to myself, the mods, and their fellow members (and the massive influx of new members!!!) all year. We'll definitely be continuing that this new year... or else? lol. And another special thanks to @jandjsalmon for covering my ass when I couldn't, and to @noxsoulmate for kicking my ass to make the 2025 FRC come to light and life on time (and early!)(and also for covering me when I can't).

This year, on a rather emergency basis, @thefriendlypigeon stepped in to make badges for the 2024 participants and they hit it out of *the park*. I simply suggested something and then they came up with these really cool backgrounds and the art didn't take that long, especially considering it was over the holidays -- AND they agreed to work with us on next year's badges as well!!!

The criteria for last year's tasks:

Participation: At least 1 task completed

Regular Mode: 100 tasks completed

Hard Mode: 190 tasks completed

Extreme Mode: 280 tasks completed

...and a badge for those who completed 100% of the tasks (300)!

And here are the badges, alongside the beautiful meanings @thefriendlypigeon found for them for inspiration when all I said was "Round, with these words surrounding them, and flowers" (talk about a mind reader)!

The backgrounds are transparent, by the way!

Participation! (At least 1 task completed.) Daisy: Daisies are cheerful, accessible, and symbolize innocence and new beginnings, perfect for participation!

Regular Mode! (At least 100 tasks completed.) Rose: Roses are classic and symbolize effort and dedication.

Hard Mode! (At least 190 tasks completed.) Cactus Flower: Cactus flowers are rare and bloom under challenging conditions, reflecting perseverance and resilience.

Extreme Mode! (At least 280 tasks completed.) Flame Lily: The flame lily is exotic, bold, and fiery, symbolizing overcoming extreme challenges.

Complete! (All 300 tasks completed.) Lotus flower: The lotus represents enlightenment, mastery, and completion. It rises beautifully from the mud, symbolizing triumph.

Do yall have a simplified version of the excel? Or something? The excel is making my brain panic and closing it out.

If you wait until tomorrow I can get you a simplified word document of it. Is Google Docs okay? I can also email a Word doc. Or just screenshot all the tasks (but that’s like 300 of them, thus me asking for till tomorrow).

I did a document version the first year of the challenge but no one seemed to use it so I just kept it to the spreadsheet version.

We do have a Discord with people who are super willing to help, just so you know! That link is on the pinned post as well, if you’re interested. I understand if you’re not though. :) All good.

And again, if you private message me I may be able to help a lot more easily!

If you can show/tell me exactly what’s frustrating you/what you’re trying to do, I can much more easily assist.

That's amazing! Well Done! You should definitely congratulate yourself for reading over 15 million words! Hopefully you're able to cross off all the other tasks too! 🖤Jandy

Sorry but the "AUs: Read a fic that is a movie/tv show AU" is like the "Alternate Universe - Actors" tag?

If it’s an Actor AU, then the characters are actually playing actors (but it’s not Real Person Fiction). Ex: Steve and Tony are rival leading men competing for the too role in a hot ticket sci fi movie.

If it’s a Movie/TV show AU, then the characters are essentially in the world of that movie or TV show. Ex: Nancy and Eleven are characters in a Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings setting.

Does that clear anything up? Hope it helps. :)

Hi! I'm enjoying the challenge and appreciate all of your hard work. Just letting you know that using the omegaverse letters is... potentially not best practice, and without the slashes (as it currently appears in the spreadsheet) it does spell out a slur. It's line 434! Thanks again!

No offense was intended. I'm Canadian and not as used to Australian terms as I'd like to be! But I've looked it up and have made the necessary change (and will remember in the future) along with a few other small cosmetic changes to the list.

For participants: The only thing that changed was adding slashes (A/B/O), as without them it is a slur. No tasks were added, removed, or altered.
