EMU made easy: the SNCB AM96

One of the more peculiar trains in Belgium is the AM96 electric multiple unit, used mainly on Intercity services. The blunt, rubber-edged nose makes it feel like some kind of afterthought on another project... and that's kind of the case. The AM96 was ordered at the same time as a batch of Intercity coaches, and the constructor, in this case Bombardier, basically went "ok, let's just build more coaches and motorise them"!

This seems particularly clear on the intermediate car: it really looks like a carriage with a pantograph shoved on top, and presumably the motors and electric equipment are slung underneath. Of course, it's probably not that simple, and there is an interesting feature at the ends: the driving cabs are slender, and can be swung aside when two units are coupled, thus creating a gangway between them. This was first demonstrated on the Danish IC3 Diesel units.

The "just motorise some carriages" has been used since, namely on some latest-generation Dostos in Germany. I do have pictures of the BR 445 Twindexx Vario, but I don't have access to them right now. Another time.

"So… Connor..."

North's voice broke through Markus' brooding. He was looking down into the atrium of the former Cyberlife Tower which was now under Jericho's control.

It was obvious to North who he was staring at. The person in question was in deep conversation with a few GJ500s. Likely discussing the best way to keep their new home secure.

Markus didn't take his eyes off him. "Connor," he parroted.

North joined him in leaning against the railing, intertwining their arms. A silence hung in the air as they observed their topic of conversation walk around the perimeter of lobby area pointing out things that the pair couldn't see from their position.

"He's been avoiding us."

"He always tries to avoid us."

"Not like this. I think we scared him off." Markus pouted in that cute way he does when he thinks about Connor, and North couldn't help but let a smile creep up her lips. She leaned over to get a better look at his expression.

"We said we would give him time, Markus." She pinched his cheek to loosen his frown. "You're so impatient."

Markus finally tore his gaze away from Connor to look at her. "I'm not impatient."

"Says the guy who was spent all of 10 minutes in Jericho before deciding it was a dump and immediately arranged a raid on a Cyberlife warehouse."

"I don't like waiting around."

North laughed, "You're impatient."

The corner of Markus' mouth tugged up before dropping as he looked out into the atrium again. His voice and expression softer. "I'm just afraid we pushed him further away."

North recalled the previous night. Connor's yellow LED flashing. The creep of blush flushing his face. "I don't know what you saw last night, but he definitely was into it. He's just trying to keep us at a distance for some reason."

The small group of androids around Connor dispersed leaving him alone in the vast space. Markus and North's eyes were riveted to him.

"I have my theories," Markus murmured.

Markus was about to continue when Connor's head snapped up locking onto their position causing both of them to freeze in place. His voice echoed inside both of their minds. "Did you two need to speak with me?"

North lifted her hand to her mouth to stifle her laugh and prevent Connor from reading her lips. "Busted."

Markus elected to play it cool because it's not like they were intentionally spying on Connor. They just happen to be here and see Connor down there. He definitely hadn't been tracking him at a distance in hopes of arranging an organic way for them to bump into each other so they could talk. Definitely not.

Markus' eyes met Connor's. There was a formality and hesitance that had colored Connor's question to them. He was trying to re-establish that distance between them, but Markus wasn't going to let him.

"Connor, can we talk about the other night?"

Connor immediately turned around so they could no longer see his face. "I'm… busy at the moment. So we'll have to talk later."

North had to stifle another laugh. "Connor we're staring right at you. You don't look very busy."

There was a short pause. North guessed it was Connor trying to collect himself. She wished she could see his flustered face.

"What I mean to say is, I don't have time at the moment for that particular conversation. If you don't have urgent business to discuss then I'll be on my way."

"Conn—" The line of communication between them abruptly cut off. Markus frowned.

"You know, we could probably jump down there and ambush him right now," North joked as she eyed Connor quickly retreating towards the building's exit.

"We're on the fourth floor."

"I'm sure you can preconstruct a safe way down."

"Look who's impatient now."

North playfully shoved him away.

Markus didn't bother mentioning to North that he had in fact tried preconstructing a quick way down, but they all resulted in one of them breaking a leg.

North turned back to see the door closing behind Connor. "He's a stubborn bastard."

"Well, that makes three of us. Shall we chase him down?"

"Markus, remember what we said about giving him time?"

"So chase him down in a few hours?"

North gave him a look.

"Tonight?"

North wrapped her arms around Markus. His impatience was contagious, but she held firm. "Tomorrow."

"Fine, tomorrow."
