Sky Doll & Sky Doll Spaceship
I basically ran into this by pure chance. I saw an image of one of the covers (Sky Doll Spaceship) and did some research on it. I was thoroughly confused why this was a Marvel title. I mean, why wasn't I looking at Spiderman or the equivalent?
Here's a Wikipedia blurb:
Sky Doll is a series of comic books, first published in 2000, by Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa, who also collaborated on W.I.T.C.H. and Monster Allergy. Sky Doll distinguishes itself from these two works by its more "adult" content and a departure from pure fantasy to a more science-fiction aesthetic. Religion and sciencefiction, as well as the power of the mass media, are important themes of the story. So far there are three volumes with a fourth in development, as well as a sketchbook published by Carlsen Comics. The first three volumes have also been released in an English-language version by Marvel Comics in collaboration with Soleil Productions.[1]
Yeah, so that make sense. It was an adaption of a Euro comic. I believe it was originally a French comic but don't quote me on that. If you notice the "Themes" mentioned in the Wiki blurb above, they mention religion and science fiction. Apparently, this comic series sort of takes shots at Roman Catholicism and Scientology. I don't know the extent but I'm just throwing that out there. I happen to find some scans from Sky Doll series, Click Here to check them out.
Meet Noa, a so-called Sky Doll; a life-like female android without rights, who exists only to serve the State's needs and desires. But when Noa meets two so-called "missionaries" who aid her escape from her tyrannical master, all hell breaks loose for our cyborg siren as she uncovers clues that she may be much more than just robotic toy. Collecting SOLEIL: Sky Doll #1-3.
What I originally ran into was not Sky Doll (The actual series) but rather Sky Doll Spaceship. Sky Doll Spaceship is a comic done by multiple (pretty popular) artists telling mini stories about Noa's past life. Noa is the Sky Doll, the main character in the Sky Doll series. I think that pretty much wraps up everything I have to say about this series. I haven't actually got a copy of it yet, it's quite expensive but perhaps it's something worth checking out. I might get Sky Doll Spaceship first because I think the art style looks pretty cool.
