In 2274, to control world population and consumption of resources, people are sent to "the carrousel" to be terminated on their 30th birthday. People's age are obvious by the color of a crystal in the palm of their hand. If someone tries to live beyond their 30th birthday (runners), they are hunted down by the "sandmen" of the Deep Sleep agency. Until their age of renewal, the privileged live a life controlled by a great computer who sees they are pleased both chemically through recreational drugs and through sex. The runners seek a place outside the domed city called Sanctuary. A sandman named Logan has his clock set forward to become a runner and hopefully expose Sanctuary for the runners and the computer.
