New 2014 Comedy Skit for Eritrea's 23 Independence Day Celebration from Bahti Meskerem
Hagos Suzinino in Zemay
The skit is shows how traditions/customs in Eritrea/n's is being somewhat lost in the younger generation not only in Eritrea but among Eritrean youth all over the world.
Eritrean Music Legend; Bereket Mengisteab - Meley
Bereket Mengisteab is an Eritrean living legend to say the least. He has been performing/singing since he was quite young, however after joining the Eritrean Liberation Front (Jebha) in 1974, he took his writing and performance skills to a whole other level. Performing and with the ELF cultural troupe, he used his lyrics to sing about Eritrea and Her struggles. Like many other ELF members, they fled to various neighboring countries. Bereket left for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia still singing about hope, a free Eritrea, and so much more while touring the world. Finally making a permanent return to Eritrea in 1998 still singing and performing all over Eritrea and the world for various historic events.
During the Derg era however, it was forbidden to sing about Eritrea in any shape, context, form, etc. But Eritreans being so resilient that we are, singers gave Eritrea code names. For example, this classic hit Meley, talks about missing Eritrea as he sings from a far or in general a song for those who are currently away from Eritrea due to the war.
"Anta ha'lal menge'dhi inte'rekhib ki'ya, Meley selam be'lelulay."
Eritrean People Liberation Front Song Awet Qalsna
Saying this song is a classic is an understatement! You are basically not even Eritrean if you have never heard this song. lol It is that serious.
Awet in tigrinya means Victory and Qalsina which is also a tigrinya means our struggle/battle. Legendary EPLF Fighter/Singer Tesfay Mehari or more commonly known as Fihira is quite known for his standout lyrics during the revolutionary war and soon after with some of his best hits covered by Eritrean artists from various age groups. This song however may be one his best songs ever written and I'm sure I can get a majority vote on that opinion lol
"Awet Qalsna be'demna, be'sim de'hafsh hiz'bina.Ze'metse yem'tsa we'rari, ab ta'rikh sow'ra he'rari."
Eritrea People Liberation Front Song Tewelidela
A song written and sung by Mulugeta Beyn more commonly known as Wedi Zagr. Tewelidela is a tigrinya word meaning "I was born born for her." Her being Eritrea. And in the song, he repeats a particular line which is "Tewelidela mebal...yeblun taqu'aa." Which basically says "Saying I was born for Her brings no regrets." Not the precise translation, but along those lines. It is a song that basically to Eritrea that says there is nothing and no one would not do for Her.
