I’ll find out, he promises, when she has the sense to ask, Do you think that Wheatley-- and it is enough, she thinks, for the moment. The medication is waning, pain creeping back into her system like the early morning light that filters in through her curtains, and she will remember it, this time, when he says I’m sorry, and she will know, already, that if she says, You didn’t do this, he will not believe her, and if she says, El, I’m fine, he will not be able to look her in the eye.

So she says neither, and instead sits up, the blanket pooling around her waist as she pats the couch in invitation.
