26 Strings: Ch. 4 Edenbrook
(Collab with @aylamwrites)
How could a person’s essence be ingrained with the walls and air of a building? How could every turn cast a shadow of their towering form? How could I have let someone become so much to me that I stopped seeing this for what it really is and… and it’s just a bunch of walls. Like him and like me, a collection of walls guarding the human condition.
The more I think about it, the more I realized Edenbrook brought me here but it’s not the reason I stayed. I stayed for them. I stayed for him. I stayed for love. But was it enough?
In Ink
(Tattoo Ethan x MC request by @fantasticfanficromanceeclipse)
With every gulp he made a new vow. Every shot was a fear he swallowed and committed to. He thought about Becca. He’s thought about nothing else. He thought about the last few hours and how everything has changed. He couldn’t help the fear of anticipation for what's to come. He’s still her boss. He still has to mask his feelings for her where the lines intersect with Edenbrook, right?
He thought about immortality.
He thought about symbols. Her symbols. Meaningful symbols. The little bits of ink that make her unique.
His symbols wouldn’t be as striking or anything. If he had to choose a symbol. He thought about what his unique devotion would look like. He thought about what part of his body would bear the mark.
He remembered Tobias and him going to a tattoo parlor back in medical school. Ethan relented that it was a terrible idea his friend would come to regret. Tobias, ever the optimist, said it was fine and “vidi veni vici” would never go out of style. It’s survived a few millennia. Ethan couldn’t comprehend that kind of commitment, to a phrase or a permanent body affixation.
Chicken
(Anon request)
The next evening Becca was enjoying a solitary moment watching reruns of Whose Line Is It Anyway. The entire day was full of visitors, condolences and tests to make sure she was alright. Her friends passed in and out throughout the day, and the only other doctor she saw from the diagnostics team was June who argued with her about forced psych assessments.
She knew she had to be here after a brush with death but she didn’t want to. There was no comfort, the food was disgusting, and being a patient sucked.
There was a short knock on her door before it clicked open. Becca glanced at the analog clock on the wall - 7:20pm - too early for final vitals of the evening and too late for dinner to be served. Come to think about it, the dinner cart didn’t come round at all today.
The smell of strong, warm sandalwood mixed with garlic and sweetness wafted through before Ethan peered around the corner.
Untitled Chapter 13 Rewrite
(Requested by @angela8756)
Ethan sat on his desk, his head in his hands as he rubbed his palms against his droopy eyelids. Becca tried to open the door, but the silver handle was locked.
“Ethan?” She called out softly, grabbing his attention. He looked up from his hands, his bloodshot eyes meeting hers through the glass. It sent a shiver down his spine- the glass between them reminding him of when she was quarantined.
“Ethan, can I come in? Please?”
He got up from his chair, his legs feeling all tingly and numb as he walked over, opening the door. He dwelled in silence as she pushed passed him and returned the door to it’s preferred position.
He took one look at her red stained cheeks. His face softened,
“Are you okay? What happened?”
“I - I’ll be fine. Are you okay?”
Hurricane (Part 6)
“I’m bored,” Becca huffed.
Naveen’s ears perked up, turning to his grandmentee. “How shall we pass the time?” he asked, delighted to change the subject from hospital budgetary needs.
“I’m up for anything.” Sienna said a bubbly voice
“Anyone want to have a chess tournament?” Elijah suggested, eyeing the old wooden set that sat on a distant bookshelf.
“Excellent idea!” Naveen agreed, getting up excitedly to grab the chess game.
Ethan felt the air in the room shift, tearing his eyes from the page to see everyone’s change of position.
“Would anyone like a glass of wine?” Ethan asked, swirling around the last drop of whiskey that was left in his glass.
An array of yes and please erupted from the group. Naveen began setting up at the table and Elijah wheeled next to him. That’s when Becca deviously crinkled her brows.
“Naveen, do you have a pack of cards?” she exclaimed, an idea ringing in her head.
The chief was too enthralled with setting up the imminent chess game to look over at her. “Check the drawers of the end and coffee tables, should be somewhere in here.”
Puling open all the draws and rifling through three until she got to the coffee table. “Found one!” Becca waved the pack victoriously at Sienna, who had moved to sit on the floor across from her best friend.
“You thinking what I’m thinking?”
