I started reading Renata Adler’s Speedboat today, mostly because it’s short and I’m behind on my Goodreads challenge, but I had to stop reading 20 pages in and read a review of it because I couldn’t make sense of it.

I first came across Renata Adler maybe three years ago when she was on the longform podcast. That’s also when I heard about Speedboat, and how it’s a “masterful work of fiction”. In a different essay, she was described as a writer’s writer -- which appealed to me, for some reason. So I got the book. And recently, I sorted my collection by page count, and Speedboat was at the top.

Even though it’s short, it doesn’t seem like the kind of book I can read quickly. The writing is so experimental, so all over the place, that all of my attention is required at all times to follow what’s going on. Which is ironic. 

It’s a bit like finding a shorter route on a map through a river, only to discover, when you get there, that it’s raining, the current is super strong, and there are leaches everywhere.
