Opinion on Nyunyu?

I actually rewatched every second of screentime Nyunyu has in the whole show just so I could be as informed as possible when answering this ask and I only spent about 5 minutes doing that haha

Anyway, Nyunyu’s a weird one.

I do I like her, what little personality she has is simple enough to be appealing, she’s kind of just super childish and puts fun above all else, initially wanting to disobey Asclepius because their jobs for her sound “boring”, and eventually just chilling with the FlipFlap gang because she has more fun with them anyway. It’s not a lot but it’s decent. Plus her design is generally cute and I’m not really bothered about the whole loli fanservice part of it.

It’s just that, like, she’s introduced in episode 10 or something as this terrifying third Amorphous child, and she’s possibly better at locating Amorphous Fragments than the rest of Asclepius, because when the Grand Wizard Salt’s dad tells Yuyu that all of the shards have been found, Nyunyu says that she “confirmed it”. So she’s introduced out of basically nowhere to kind of put pressure on Yayaka, being her replacement and all that, and then she confronts Hidaka and Sayuri, draws a gun on them, and then has her little “Nyunyunyu” thing with Yayaka. And then we cut away and like the next scene Nyunyu’s just part of the squad. All she does in the squad is play around with her little flying donut ring thing and also Bu-chan, which makes for some nice visuals since like, she is cute, but you kind of have to wonder what the point is? Like, I think the show does probably have too many characters for its runtime, and with episode 10 and onwards in which Nyunyu’s introduced also being I think the weakest section of the show, Nyunyu’s addition feels like time was wasted on something we didn’t need, when instead the show’s final arc itself could’ve been made better. 

But I have seen some arguments leaning a bit more into her favour. She’s comic relief for the last few episodes as they get darker in tone. I can see that as a possibility though tbh I don’t think the tone gets dark enough to require a new comic relief character when Hidaka and Bu-chan and Uexküll and Papika sometimes already exist. Won’t deny liking the “Nyunyunyu” scene though, Yayaka’s little “you’re a funny one” is a brilliant line.

I’ve also seen it be argued that she’s pointless on purpose to serve as a parody on “pure type” contemporary art. I don’ really buy that, also fuck contemporary art most of the time anyway, but if we this as fact I still think it’s lame. It’s like how the mecha episode went way too in-your-face and unsubtle with its themes and developments and stuff, but people say that was on purpose to pay homage to the mecha genre. Like, maybe, but I don’t think it’s in line with Flip Flappers and actually goes against its usual subtlety. In the same way, if Nyunyu’s pointless on purpose because like, parody on contemporary art, I don’t think it’s in line with the spirit of the show to waste a character on that, especially when all the Hyperart Thomasson stuff serves that purpose way better.

And another one that gets brought up a bit it seems is that Nyunyu’s entire character is a Chekov’s gun joke. Because she does have a gun (it’s a really normal gun which is quite funny, cause like Toto and Yuyu have like super-tech and shit but funny loli has real gun, I like that) and it’s only ever shot once, namely to reactivate Bu-chan which like, kinda serves a purpose. I can actually buy that this was intentional, but I feel the execution’s a bit off since A) we actually meet Nyunyu before we ever see her with a gun, so she’s not really in the spirit of that and B) reactivating Bu-chan doesn’t really have much of a narrative purpose anyway. Also if she really were just one big Chekov’s gun joke then the like 1 or 2 other things she does do that occasionally have even the most minute narrative impact seem to betray that joke. So actually I can’t really buy that either.

This isn’t necessarily a justification for her existence, but I saw a theory that she’s a clone of Papika, while Toto and Yuyu are clones of Cocona. Apparently this cloning process happened when they were kidnapped at the end of episode 1. I guess the justification for Nyunyu’s clone taking longer than Cocona’s is because Cocona’s directly descended from Mimi? I don’t think this theory has much to go off of tbh, I appreciate the attempt to rationalise how the Amorphous children came into being but I don’t really see anything there, and that fake kidnapping at the end of episode 1 is such dumb bullshit that I don’t want it to be justified with such a baseless theory as this.

Apparently she might be an Eva reference? Something about an excuse to say "Third child" and Yayaka's fear of being replaced? I've never seen Eva so I don't know anything about that, but devoting an entire character to the one reference seems a bit pointless.

Anyway, uh, there doesn’t really seem to be much justification for Nyunyu to exist.

This is basically the only thing said about her in the Memorial Booklet too. It’s entirely possible that her character design was finalised before the script was, and had the scriptwriter not changed after episode 6 that Nyunyu might have ended up being more, but we can’t know for sure. 

Sure looks like a certain zombie took inspiration from her design lol.

Anyway TL;DR my thoughts on Nyunyu are that I do like her because she’s funny and cute, but I also think she contributes literally nothing to the narrative or themes of the show, and probably should’ve been removed so that anything better could have happened.
