Liam isn’t exactly sure how it works. How he’s alive. He’s not sure when it happened, either. He can’t remember his childhood all that well, wonders if that means that memories are stored not in the brain but in the heart.
But the facts are this:
One. Liam’s heart doesn’t beat in his chest. It does beat, in its own little box on Liam’s bedside table, but he can leave and go to work and do everything other humans do, except he does it while leaving his heart at home.
Two. When Liam falls in love, he doesn’t just give his metaphorical heart to someone. He gives them the box, to take care of for better or worse. He learned that one the hard way, when he’d first fallen in love and found that one morning it’d just disappeared, ended up on someone else’s bedside table.
Three. No matter what the recipient does with it, whether they throw it out or shriek or call the police - very valid options even if no one but Liam and the recipient can open the box - it has a way of coming back to them, at least until they hand it back to Liam or Liam finds it back in his possession. Until his heart is his again, doesn’t belong anymore to whoever he - sometimes unwillingly - gave it to.

“I’m so sorry,” he mumbled into Louis’ chest, as he began to drift off.
“We’ll be alright,” Louis whispered. Maybe it was a prayer. Or, Harry is a vigilante who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders and Louis needs him to stop before he kills himself Part 1 of a vigil fire

Louis had always been Harry's rock.
While it was Harry who had the enhanced mutated genes in his DNA that made it possible for him to do things any normal human would be physically incapable of doing, Louis was the one with the mental fortitude in their relationship.
Louis was strong and he was brave and he was unafraid and those are the qualities that drew Harry towards Louis in the first place. He was also gentle and caring and fiercely protective, he looked after Harry and supported him through thick and thin and if it wasn't for Louis. Harry would have been lost a long while ago.
Louis was Harry's rock.
But sometimes, Harry wondered if Louis knew he didn't always have to be.

Liam turns his back to them as he gathers everything he needs from the boat. "That's alright," he says over his shoulder. He's too tired to be annoyed with them. "What are you up to anyway? Romantic sunset dinner?" he tries to joke but in the silence that follows, he figures he's hit the nail on the head.

Here's a list of fics I read in loved in 2025. I read 75 fics this year (being employed really did a number on my productivity when it comes to reading), and, although I really struggle with choosing favourites, these are a few of them. I tried to limit it to one fic per author to avoid this list being the same people over and over.
🫧 Slippery When Wet by yeah_alright / @uhoh-but-yeah-alright (E, 3.4k)
Harry has a habit of hot tubbing topless, to both the delight and dismay of her housemates Louis and Zayn. When it gets to be too much for Louis one day, she flees to her room to take care of herself, only to be surprised by Zayn showing up in her doorway and suggesting they take mutual advantage of Louis' view of the back garden where Harry's still enjoying her hot tub time.
In which Louis finds out the only thing hotter than Harry is getting off a few feet from a good friend who finds her just as overwhelming.
I loved how fun this one was! Really enjoyed it!

Written for prompt 6 of the 1DAngstFest 2025: Louis is a rogue on the run from his birth pack, who want to kill him because he's a male omega. He ends up in the Styles pack's territory, trying to get away from his hunters. But it's too late--the alphas surround the exhausted omega and attack him. The last thing he sees, before he passes out, is a huge black wolf with green eyes.
What a sight to die to.
A story about prejudice, prophecies, and rejection. Also a story about kindness, resilience and soulmates.
This was such a captivating and beautifully written story! I truly couldn't put it down.

I'm a little late to the party with this one, but I loved how funny and silly it was.

When their skin turned prune-like, they returned to shore, laying out on their towels beneath the bright sun, snacking on fruit and chocolate while talking about everything and nothing.
At some point, Harry had shared, “I think this has been my favorite summer yet.”
“Why’s that?” Louis asked, a smile peeking out as though he already knew. He looked so pretty and cool with his sun-kissed skin and black Ray-Bans covering his eyes.
Harry rolled over on his towel until he was half-pressed against Louis and placed his palms on top of Louis’ chest, tucking his chin over them. “Because I had you.”

I'm not joking when I say this ruined my life. It was just so heartbreaking and beautiful and so so so well written! I kept screaming the entire time I was reading (mostly at Louis, because my GOD did he need it, but Harry received a good scolding too). I honestly couldn't recommend it enough.

It’s the summer before Louis' senior year of college and he’s spending it getting drunk with his friends, working an internship he hates, and hooking up with Harry, the ‘straight’ frat boy he met in January. There’s only six weeks until school starts.
I really enjoyed reading this! Such a fun read!

But hearing him say it now, out loud, made it feel like everything inside Harry was unravelling.
His voice wavered, and for just a second, he was afraid all the truths he had kept so hidden might spill out. But they didn’t. He swallowed, his eyes flicking again to the heavy church doors. All he said was, “Yeah, I guess it does.”
Or, the one where there's always something standing in their way and they keep missing their chance. Until they don't.
This one was heartbreaking but so beautiful and I loved it a lot.
