" I want a lifetime "

28th April 2021.

William was laying down on the bed and thinking how their life had changed. Their. His and Catherine's.

He looked up at the clock hanging on the wall. 10:35 PM. Ten years before at this time, they were not seeing each other but just impatiently waiting for what was to come in the next hours when they became a married couple and began a completely new chapter in their life.

To say that a lot of things have changed since that day would be like saying nothing at all.

They have welcomed three children into their "little family" . George, Charlotte and Louis were now sleeping soundly in another room.

Hearing them say "I love you, papa" was the most precious thing in William's life.

Catherine and her husband also had become 'parents' of two dogs as well.

Some people that surrounded them in Westminster Abbey either left in the worst circumstances possible or passed away, just like William's grandfather, weeks before a tenth anniversary. It made him feel incredibly unhappy. It has been more than ten days from Prince Philip's funeral but it was still something his grandson could not get over. Catherine's support was the only source of his relief and happiness these past days and weeks. He knew that he was lucky and basically couldn't ask for anything better.

Well, he could. His wife wasn't next to him and William needed her.

10 years earlier they were required to not be together because of the 'wedding rules'. Now, he didn't want to endure that loneliness again.

As he knocked on the office door, Catherine hadn't said anything, so he just entered quietly and looked over her shoulder, noticing she was writing something in her private notebook. "28th April 2021 … " .

“Hmm, someone's writing her memories?” William whispered and smelled her hair.

Catherine startled, putting her notebook in a drawer as fast as possible “What are you doing here? I told you I will be in the bedroom before 11 PM”

“I simply missed you, my wife”.

She kissed him on the lips suddenly. After that she said while smirking “Good to know that you are still missing your 'old' wife. But I am afraid that you have to wait a few more minutes. I'm going to take a shower”.

William smiled at her and was about to turn his head around when he heard Kate saying: “Don't you dare look into my drawers!”

29th April 2021.

In the morning, Catherine had a huge smile on her face. That smile was caused, firstly of a dream that she had at night with her husband and children in it, and secondly because right after opening her eyes she has been spoiled by William. Breakfast in bed, just like almost every day during the first year of their marriage. They've also exchanged wedding anniversary gifts. Catherine gifted him a collage of their photos taken by her over the years. William brushed her hair and gave her plenty of hugs and kisses that led to a situation when she had to control herself before leaving the room, her face was blushing red.

“Wait..” William pulled her closer to himself again “I think that now you can tell me what you were writing in your notebook, or perhaps should I say 'diary'”

She raised her eyebrows and said with sarcasm “Yes, I will read it out loud!”

The Duchess jokingly pushed her husband away from herself, giggling.

William followed her and they came to the kitchen together where their three children were saying: "Happy anniversary!" .

Catherine screamed happily, she was astonished. William and her were aware that their children were intelligent but they had no idea what to say at that exact moment. Her eyes got teary and she came to hug George, Louis and Charlotte. William cleared his throat, saying:”May I join this special hug?”

Catherine extended her arm to her husband and they hugged for a while. Charlotte pulled herself away from them all and came to the kitchen table.

“Mummy! Papa! We made some drawings for you!”

Kate was totally surprised “Oh my god! That's awesome! You're getting better at it day by day!”.

She prepared breakfast for her kids and while they were eating, she went to put drawings into a box where she collected all of the things her family made for her over the years.

“I am so lucky..” she murmured when she heard her dog's bark. Their little female Cocker Spaniel wanted to go for a walk. Her 'mother' smiled and petted Orla.

“We're going to the garden now” She said a bit louder to let her family know the plans.

“We want to go with you. Wait!” Louis said and quickly stood up.

His mum laughed a little and the whole Cambridge family went outside.

During their 'family walk', William grabbed his wife's hand all of sudden and whispered into her ear “Do you remember our long car rides in the years before marriage? Or even minutes after we tied the knot?”

“I do”

“If you do, don't ask me any further questions, Mrs. Wales. I know you probably thought I haven't got you any gift but you were wrong..”

“Listen, it doesn't make any sense at all. We cannot just 'escape' like if it was a rare day at the university..”

William squeezed her hand and softly whispered into her ear again “Can't we, for once, forget about the responsibility that began once we had become parents? Especially on a day like this?”

Kate looked deeply into his eyes and she knew he was right. They needed some 'escape'. Just the two of them.

“Do you want to go somewhere in particular? William asked after more than 20 minutes of a car ride. He seemed to feel a bit bored although it was his idea.

“I thought we wanted a car ride, not a sightseeing trip” Catherine said

“I do not mind just riding around”

“But you want something else?”

“If you're assuming then yes, it would be nice”.

Catherine turned the radio on. The first thing they heard was some breaking news and minutes later some boring songs they both were not big fans of.

William turned it off, saying “Suddenly, I prefer silence..”

“There was no silence, we were talking”

“You know what I mean” he sighed

“Stop the car”.

William did that and was followed by his question “Why do I get a feeling that you are annoyed?”

“I am not annoyed or frustrated. Nothing like that. It's just..’

“Yes?”

“It is the first year when we are not getting wedding anniversary wishes from both of my grandparents.. Ugh, it just feels off somehow. It's the 10th anniversary and he's not here to see it..” William sighed and looked in Catherine's direction “Do you get my point?”

“I do but he is still seeing it.. He can see it all. It is the same situation as with your mother, as with my grandparents. They're all watching over us right now and feeling happy about how far we came in this relationship, I am sure they're all proud too”.

William wiped away some of the tears running down his cheeks. Soon he felt the touch of his wife's hand on his face.

“There is no need to hide your pain just because it's our anniversary. You are still hurt over your grandfather's death. I can feel it, but remember that I will support you as much as I can..” Catherine said.

He sniffed and looked into her eyes. “It was thanks to you that I basically opened up about my mother's death.. I met you and I realised that I can share anything I need with you. Soon I fell in love and there was no way back for me”.

He smiled weakly and put his hand into Catherine's. She smiled too and her husband continued “These 20 years flashed before me right now. Yet you are still here. We're celebrating ten years of our marriage and you are again helping me to overcome sadness after the death of a person I was close to..”

“ "For better, for worse". We promised that to each other at the altar 10 years ago, right?”

William nodded and caressed his wife's cheek, said quietly: “You really managed to make a difference. In everything. In your work, which is a topic for another conversation because words can't really describe how proud I am of my "babykins" who is now an amazing Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge..”

“Oh god, it has been ten years. It just occurred to me!” Catherine exclaimed and covered her mouth to hide her pure shock. It caused William's giggle, and a second later he spoke up again: “Yes. You're fantastic in this role. You made a difference in the mental health stigma and many other subjects” he squeezed her hand more at this point - “But also, you made the biggest difference possible. You basically erased my way of thinking I've been stuck with since 1997..”.

Kate quietly said his name, now it was her who got tears and William had to wipe them away from her face.

“Hsshh..” he whispered and kissed her.

The next few seconds were completely silent. Just them gazing into each other's eyes.

“My words spoken a few seconds ago are another proof of how you managed to make a difference..”.

They giggled together, playing with one another's fingers. There was no particular destination for that car trip, just as planned. Instead, they were listening to a special playlist they once created for each other, with songs of their favourite musicians that also were the ones they went to see live at concerts. Coldplay and Ellie Goulding.

William and his wife were singing along to some of the songs, remembering the old times but also feeling careless and in love.

When "Your song", the song performed by Ellie at William and Catherine's wedding reception in the evening of 29th April 2011 for their first dance came on shuffle, their eyes met immediately and Kate trembled a little.

William noticed it and just whispered as squeezing her hand:

“I love you, Catherine”

“I love you too, William”

10:30 PM. The Duchess Of Cambridge was again looking at the drawings by her children she got earlier in the day.

William followed her, looked at Louis' work particularly and said, trying not to chuckle:

“It is another of your successes, my wife. If I would be the one to show them how to make it, they would never create it themselves”

“Well, I must agree..” Catherine chuckled and put her hand on her husband's lower back while still looking at Charlotte's drawing of them both. “She is really talented, don't you think?”

“She is, indeed. Just like her beautiful mother..”

“Stop flattering me! You've been doing it by the whole day”

“Am I flattering you?”

“Yes, you are”

“I might stop but only..”

“Only if I'll show you my diary ? No way”

“Hmm, now you are admitting it is actually a diary. Interesting.”.

“Could you just..”

He cut her off as answering her previous question:

“I might stop flattering you if you will wear jacket and go with me”

“What?”

“You've heard what I said, Mrs. Wales”

“No.. I mean, we can't leave the children again.. I get that it is our anniversary but it is not an excuse for us to leave them”

“On the contrary, it is a perfect excuse” he grinned “We'll be back here in an hour, so don't worry. Just come with me.”

“William..”

“Catherine..” He looked at her with determination. She wanted to hesitate but realised she was not going to win so just held his hand.

“Have you told them that we're leaving? They were quite upset earlier today so it would be better if you revealed your plans this time..”

They were now in the garden. William's wife was sitting on the swing and he was pushing her.

“They are sleeping now, but if you're worried, I have told George and he was responsible to keep it a secret because if Charlotte or Louis would know, they could have told you and ruin my surprise”

“You have lots of surprises for me today”

A few seconds later William, with a smirk on his face, showed his wife a bottle of champagne and two glasses that were hidden under one of the trees until now.

Kate could feel that her husband was proud of himself, she giggled and stood up from the swing.

“It is our 10th anniversary so I couldn't disappoint you, my wife” he said as he poured champagne for her

Catherine looked at him, trembled a bit ‘Could you say it again? It has been exactly 10 years since I heard you saying these words for the first time..”

“That's true, my wife” William smiled and fixed her hair.

Suddenly, Catherine kissed him on the lips. She obviously had to stand on her tiptoes because of the height difference with him but it was not a problem for her now.

“What was that?” William asked, he was blushing a little

“You can consider it as 'thank you' “

“Thank you" for?”

“Everything” she replied quickly and took a deep breath “For every moment when you supported me through these 10 years even if you felt like you let me down. Believe me or not but you have not failed. Never. It is not only my opinion but of my family too because I know you depend on their opinions sometimes” she smiled a little.

William took her into his arms and then he petted her hair as he said “You can be assured that I will try to take care of you even more in the future, when our responsibility towards the monarchy and the country will grow in time”.

“I do not need to be assured. I can feel your words will come true” Catherine smiled.

William noticed tears underneath her eyes and just hugged her tightly, almost causing her to spill champagne on the ground.

They chuckled quietly, but then William smelled his wife's hair, kissed her on the forehead seconds later.

“I will also support you, my William..”

“I know. I know that you will support me, my adorable Kate” He smiled and poured some champagne for himself too then.

“Happy the 10th wedding anniversary, Catherine Elizabeth”

“Happy 10th wedding anniversary, William Arthur Phillip Louis.”.

They were about to kiss again when The Duchess looked at her wedding ring, giggling quietly

“What's the matter, Kate?”

“Sometimes my finger still hurts from the moment when you were giving me this..” she extended her hand and William just kissed her on it.

“Better now?”

Catherine nodded and lovingly smiled at him.

They kissed before and right after taking a sip of champagne.

After sitting on their swing for at least 40 minutes, William held his wife's hand and led her towards their home after noticing she was shivering from the cold weather.

Right after coming back home, proud parents went to the rooms of George, Charlotte and Louis. They were all sleeping soundly.

A few minutes later, in the bedroom Catherine was searching for something on William's shelf in their wardrobe. He was watching her silently for a few moments. Finally, he asked: “May I ask what are you doing, Mrs. Wales?”

“You really have not even a little assumption?”

“Well, if you want to take my shirt to wear it, you need to get my permission”

“Permission, you say? For basically the last ten years a permission was not needed. Why is it suddenly Mr. Wales?”

“I've been thinking that perhaps we should change some things in marriage after all those years?” William smirked and came closer to Catherine. He slowly pressed his lips on hers, kissing her passionately but slowly at the same time.

Kate put her hand on his chest and pushed him back a bit and then, trying not to laugh

“I don't think so..” She said, taking away one of his light blue shirts with herself

“That was not acceptable, Mrs. Wales..” William murmured as staring at her and noticed she was close to bursting into laughter so he remarked: “You have to be quiet, our kids are sleeping”

“I know” she said and quickly went to the bathroom where she finally could laugh freely.

After taking a shower, The Duchess of Cambridge went to her office, pulled out her notebook.. She had time to write something down because William was taking a shower at the same time. She hasn't noticed the time passing. Her phone had been left on the desk, and soon it buzzed with a new text message:"Babykins...♡ W" .

His wife knew what it meant. William was waiting in their bedroom and this time obviously not because he was feeling sleepy.

Catherine giggled, in a hurry checked herself in the bathroom mirror and went back to the bedroom.

Her notebook was left on the desk..

30th April 2021.

William woke up and kissed his wife on her neck right then

“I am not sleeping anymore. You don't have to wake me up” She murmured and smiled a bit as trying not to tremble too hard because of his kiss

‘I just wanted to kiss my wife”

“You were kissing your wife all night so that she couldn't sleep properly” Catherine replied as trying not to chuckle with half-closed eyes and again put William's shirt on her body before getting up slowly.

He held her hand gently and said “You look beautiful, Catherine”

“It is not our anniversary day anymore so you don't have to flatter me. My appearance is far away from "beautiful" “

“Can't I flatter you on a daily basis?”

Catherine just smiled lovingly and headed towards the door when William called her name and added “Would you mind if I'd join you in the bathroom, my wife?”.

In response, she threw one of the pillows at him.

After breakfast, Kate asked her husband to bring her calendar as she wanted to check the next scheduled "Zoom" calls.

As he came to her office, he noticed her organiser but also something that was put right in front of his eyes. Her "diary".

Firstly, he looked at the first page. It read: "This journal belongs to.. Catherine W"

He smirked as realising that "W" was for his often used 'surname' - Wales.

“Let me see what you have written here, Mrs. Catherine Wales..”

"28th April 2021,

ten years ago, I was counting hours until the most beautiful day of my life. I couldn't wait. I could not wait for the moment when I'd be able to refer to 'my William' as 'my husband'. Now, I am waiting for our 10th anniversary. I would say 'wow' to quote my reaction from the moment William and I were entering the balcony of Buckingham Palace. I feel like this time flashed before my eyes so quickly..

" 29th April 2021,

could someone give me an answer to the question that literally haunts me for the last few hours? This question is easy yet also the toughest ever: 'What did I do to get love like my husband and our children give me?' If not getting the answer means the continuation of our family fairytale, then I do not ever want to get that answer. I am the happiest while also being well aware that some difficulties are ahead of us. With my three bundles of joy and William, I am ready to face it, though..."

A voice coming from the living room interrupted him from reading more.

“Have you found my planner, William? It should be on the desk, next to post-its”

“Yes, just now. I'm coming!”.

He closed Kate's secret diary notebook, put it into the drawer where it's been beforehand and smiled softly.

While going to see his "happiest" wife again, William thought to himself: "I'm pretty sure being with me is just a mistake she forgot to correct years ago, but I'm not ever going to remind her. I don't want just another 10 or 20 years of marriage with my Catherine. I want a lifetime".
