It’s been well over a year or two since I last worked with pixel art so be gentle in your criticism 😅
I tossed together a player ship (keeping in mind I’ve pushed Yolhammer back and am learning C++ and OpenGL) with the idea that these sprites may be used for a game in the future and I attempted to draw an alien planet 😬 I need to look into more shading techniques.

I’m really enjoying getting back into pixel art so if you have any helpful links send em my way!
Working on more environmental sprites until I find a programmer to help work on the functionality itself. This is the hornet’s nest. They’ll be placed on trees throughout the forests.
Been working on a few animals to roam the woodlands of Yolhammer. Behold, butterflies and the mighty squirrel!
I want to make games so which code should i learn?
I’m unsure if you already have an engine picked out because you asked which language to use and different engines may use different languages so here we go.
I personally would say you may want to download the Unity engine. Unity is a tool developers use to basically build the world, add items, characters, etc. There are, of course, other engines out there but Unity is one that most people tend to use. Then there’s also Cryengine and Unreal Engine although, these are more advanced and have a wider learning curve. Unity is free to use (there are also features that only paid users are allowed.) and most colleges will instruct their students to use Unity for their learning. If you scroll down far enough, you’ll see the games I made while learning. Although I never finished them, Unity has more than enough power to make good games while learning. Unity supports 3D and 2D game development and I don’t believe Unreal or Cry engine do. (Not positive on that so correct me if I’m wrong everyone..) There are a lot of lower-level engines out there as well such as Love Engine (I hope I’m spelling all of these correctly…). I’m assuming you want to make the entire game on your own, right? If not then you’ll need a team of friends. If You do plan to develop alone, you’ll need a programming language that the engine supports. I know Unity supports C# and JavaScript. Most would tell you to learn JavaScript first because it’s easier to grasp and I do believe that to be true. Trust me, go JavaScript. I’m unsure of what languages you should study for the other engines but I assume most of them use JavaScript or C#. I’d check for yourself on that.
I really hope this helps you or someone out there to get started.
Good luck!
As promised (albeit a little late…) here are some screenshots of the front of the shield along with a few things I added today. The monster is my old art of a “Dead Tree Ent”. The Ents I plan to add into Yolhammer will usually blend in with other trees but attack you when you get too close. That’s what this one is doing. When its eyes and the bird’s open, the ent swings it’s sharp limbs at you. I also added some old sprites of wilderness such as a stump, bushes, and a different type of tree. I forgot I made those at all but glad I found them! I stayed up all night (haven’t been asleep yet as I write this) doing all of this and even modeled some low poly trees. My inspiration for the trees comes from Runescape. All of my 2d art is inspired by The Elder Scrolls Daggerfall, and my 3D art is inspired by The Elder Scrolls Oblivion (although I’m obviously nowhere near as good as either of these companies in any area of the field hahaha!).
Best Game Engine Software for Beginners
The quest to find the best game engine for beginners often revolves around balancing ease of use with sufficient power to realize a creative vision. Many aspiring indie developers face a significant hurdle: they want to develop a game quickly and efficiently, without being bogged down by steep learning curves or extensive tutorials. Reddit user Slimelot recently posed a crucial question within…
The Undergrowth Devlog #1
End of Day Thoughts: Jesus Fucking Christ I might be jumping into this head first, I gotta take it SO MUCH SLOWER.
So hey, I've decided to make a game. I've wanted to make a game for a long time, but I never had a proper idea I liked - until today!!
The game's current name is The Undergrowth, and it is a dungeon crawler (I might be using the term wrong here) based on exploring and collecting loot from an abandoned, ruined, and reclaimed by nature urban environment. Think broken box tvs being used as flower beds! For some reason this type of game came to me, and something about it made it endearing to me, and it was the perfect place to use two characters of mine that I created with no particular goal in mind: Brutus and Daredevil.
Mutuals that have known me for a long time might've seen a post or two with these characters in sim form, and yes, these are the same characters from those posts, but a bit reworked.
I decided to work on brainstorming this project in a way that is comfortable and usual for me: Opening a blank canvas and writing away, making little doodles and sketches on the sides to illustrate my ideas along the way. Pictures of what I wrote today will be under the cut! Please be respectful and don't steal!!!
I also gathered up many tutorials on the game making process, particularly involving the GDevelop software, which for now is what I will be using to make this game. However, I am a fairly unorganized person and my attention span for technical things is not the best (I may have adhd but I have not been diagnosed yet, so yeah), so I will have to return to those another day. I also am someone who is um, let's say, very rushed in the creation process and I try to go for the finish line before even starting the race, but I will force myself not to do it here!!! I will stay in the concepting stage for as long as needed, and I will remind myself that this project will take a very long time, but I can do it and there is no better time to start than now!!!
The information on the images bellow IS STILL SUBJECT TO CHANGE!!!! Thank you
