Washington, DC: Anniversary of Odessa Massacre in Ukraine
Thursday, May 2 - 12:00 to 3:00 pm
This May 2, for the third year in a row, we will hold a vigil outside the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, D.C. and will deliver a letter addressed to the Ukrainian government with the relatives’ demands. We invite you to join us, from 12 noon to 1 p.m. outside the embassy at 3350 M St. NW, Washington, D.C. 20007.
Then at 2 pm, Phil Wilayto of the Odessa Solidarity Campaign will speak at the Venezuelan Embassy about the Odessa massacre and the situation in Ukraine. The address is 1099 30th St., NW Washington, DC in Georgetown. This May 2 will mark five years since a fascist-led mob murdered scores of progressive activists in Odessa, Ukraine, in what has been described as one of Europe’s worst cases of civil unrest in modern times. The massacre took place just months after a U.S.-backed coup put a right-wing government in power and emboldened paramilitary organizations inspired by the Ukrainian nationalists who sided with Nazi occupiers during World War II. Even though many cellphone videos of the massacre clearly show the faces of the perpetrators of this crime, to date not one of the murderers has been brought to justice. That is why, in the face of government repression and fascist threats, the relatives of those who were killed continue to demand an international investigation to find those responsible. The relatives and their supporters regularly hold memorials at the scene of the massacre, with large gatherings taking place each May 2. The USA-based Odessa Solidarity Campaign, in cooperation with European organizations, is calling for local actions to take place May 2 in cities around the world, to support the relatives’ demand for an international investigation and demand an end to the ongoing repression of the relatives and of journalists looking into the events of May 2, 2014.

By Alexander Chalenko September 19: Yesterday, the Illichivsk City Court of Odessa acquitted the participants of the May 2 events from the Antimaidan [antifascist opponents of the February 2014 right-wing coup in Kiev]. This decision provoked the anger of Ukrainian nationalists. The judges considered that the accused "Kulikovtsy" did not take part and did not organize riots in Odessa on May 2, 2014. At the same time, the court immediately arrested two of the acquitted defendants -- Ukrainian Sergey Dolzhenkov and Russian Evgeny Mefyodov -- for 60 days on another charge. They were charged under Article 110 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, accused of separatism.
Alexey Albu, a former deputy of the Odessa Regional Council and survivor the attack on the House of Trade Unions on May 2, 2014, said:
“In my opinion, there is a political will to keep these people behind bars in any case. The court vindicates them on the one hand, and on the other -- they are jailed again under another article. I think that it is in the interests of the top people of the state: Poroshenko, Turchinov, Avakov, Parubiy and all those who were involved in the organization of this massacre. “It also seems to me that the court decision may be linked to the fact that now a great destabilization campaign brewing in Odessa. It’s connected with a fire at the Victoria Children's Camp, which resulted in the deaths of several children. This is a terrible tragedy which the nationalists tried to use today to overthrow the mayor of Odessa, demanding that he resign. And not only nationalists, but a number of politicians, like Saakashvili, like Hurwitz, want to do this, and one of Odessa's leading businessmen Adnan Kivan is interested in this. Today they want to remove the mayor of Odessa with the help of the nationalists. On September 20 at Duma Square near City Hall, large protest actions are scheduled. And in order to shift attention to another problem, the question of May 2 was raised. A positive decision was taken that triggered a confrontation and shifted public attention from Victoria Children’s Camp to May 2.”
