Today at Pemberley, The 8th of April:

Shortly after breakfast, Mr. Darcy excused himself from the rest of the party at Pemberley to the solitude of his library. Ostensibly, this was to look over some matters his steward had brought to his attention. 

During these weeks of Lady Catherine’s visit a pattern seems to have developed of direct correlation between how often Mr. Darcy has business to see to and how much he is irritated by his aunt. This perhaps explains why Mrs. Elizabeth Darcy blithely intruded on Mr. Darcy despite his alleged occupation.

“Are you truly busy?” Mrs. Darcy asked as she entered the library.

“I am always available for you,” Mr. Darcy replied, as he set aside what certainly appeared be a book and not business of any kind. “By what matter is your mind engaged?”

Mrs. Darcy turned aimlessly across the room. “Charlotte continues to make new claims of having suspected us both quite early on, before we thought to suspect ourselves. This morning, she claimed to suspect that you were in very good danger from me while Jane was ill at Netherfield. Which is an obvious flight of fancy as she was not even there. She only had my recounting of events to base her opinion upon.”

Mr. Darcy made no response but Mrs. Darcy read confirmation in his expression.

“Charlotte was right?” she exclaimed.

“I could not have admitted to my feeling at that time,” Mr. Darcy said, “but if I now indulge in retrospections, then yes. I was in danger and I knew it.”
