dissertation progress so far
I told myself I would start in July, using July/Aug/Sept to study for my dissertation. It is now the 29th July and I am a little bit less headstrong about my capability to do this dissertation at all. BUT I have made some important realizations about what is really approachable within the length of this dissertation, what is not as as arguable as I would have hoped and what is fundamental to my understanding of photography. It’s kind of been a survival thing where I’ve had to choose something about photography I couldn’t do without / something connecting my interests that I really want to write about.
I vaguely knew I wanted to write about the extent to which the artist’s own subjectivity feeds into the artworks they make and how this occurs. I intend to explore models of perception and case studies which either support that the artist is able to surf subject matter freely without the influence of personal experience or on the other hand very immersed in their experiences / perception
visual perception (surfaces, materiality, installation, sculpture)
narrative / stasis, time and duration (single photograph/solitary photograph vs. the series)
to what extent is a though process leading to a final artwork shaped by the artist’s decision and what portion of this process is influenced by chance (is anything left to chance? ie. determined not by the artist but by circumstances which are not initially apparent which reveal themselves in the exploration of subject matter? does this still count as chance though?)
