Ageing Gratitude

You say that I complain like someone much older than I am, And while reckless choices and dodgy joints lend credence to my claims, I am not as old as I sound.

It is partly for the fun of complaining, Of exaggerating the little things in service of a joke. But it is also a way for me to savour my youth, To be wistful about the time I still have before it is sand slipping from my fingers.

I am not nostalgic for a mythologised past But for the present moment, Because one day I will truly be old and things will hurt and ache even more, And when that day comes I want to be ready to reminisce And not have forgotten all these wondrous things in the mean time. If you only appreciate what you have when it is gone, Is there a better way to be grateful Than to pretend it is already too late?
