365 Plays/365 Days
Ok so a few weeks back I decided that for the new year I am going to be reading one play each and every day of this year. This whole thing was suggested by a friend and fellow student who is also doing the same thing. I am studying theatre and I need to read as many texts as I can get my hands on to explore the different styles of different playwrights and the styles of different forms of theatre. From Shakespeare to Miller, from Beckett to Kushner, from full-lengths to one-acts I will attempt to read them. I myself have roughly over 150 plays and anytime I can spare the money I will buy more from chain book shops or used book shops and even thrift shops. And when I can't afford it the library at my school has a fantastic selection of plays. No matter what, I am going to attempt reading a play every single day for this year. Will I accomplish this? I don't know. But I do hope to at the very least read all the plays that I myself possess. This is going to be difficult with school starting up again and being in the new play down there as well, along with keeping up with homework, getting memorized and trying to find a job. This will be a challenge but I am willing to undertake it the best I can.
And now it begins.
Father Comes Home From the Wars (Part 1) by Suzan-Lori Parks
FATHER: Hi honey, Im home.
MOTHER: Yr home.
FATHER: Yes.
MOTHER: I wasnt expecting you. Ever.
FATHER: Should I go back out and come back in again?
MOTHER: Please.
He goes back out and comes back in again.
MOTHER: Once more.
FATHER: Yr kidding.
MOTHER: Please.
He goes back out and comes back in again.
MOTHER: Yr home.
FATHER: Yes.
MOTHER: Let me get a good look at you.
FATHER: I'll just turn around.
MOTHER: Please.
He turns around once. Counterclockwise.
