MIGRAINE AWARENESS WEEK 2017 As well as Hemicrania Continua I also have Chronic Migraine. It’s possibly quite difficult for someone to understand how you can have two different types of headache disorder but in fact it is possible to suffer from several types of headache disorders, each with their own debilitating symptoms. There are many different types of migraine, even some which are strangely painless! Being chronic typically means I suffer from several attacks a week, most days I’m fighting migraine symptoms in some shape or form, whether through pain, loss of vision, loss of power, nausea and vomiting or loss of balance. I have become a master at battling but it places huge limitations on my life. In the spirit of raising awareness, here are some facts about migraine: Migraine is ranked globally as the seventh most disabling disease among all diseases (responsible for 2.9% of all years of life lost to disability/YLDs) and the leading cause of disability among all neurological disorders. Severe migraine attacks are classified by the World Health Organization as among the most disabling illnesses, comparable to dementia, quadriplegia and active psychosis. Depression is three times more common in people with migraine or severe headaches than in healthy individuals. Despite how disabling Migraine is, it is still the least publicly funded of all neurological illnesses relative to its economic impact. AND, worldwide, just four hours are committed to headache disorders in formal undergraduate medical training, and 10 hours in specialist training. Most people probably wouldn’t know the huge numbers of headache disorders there are OR that individuals can and often do suffer from more than one. People struggle to get a correct diagnosis, appointments are often few and far between. A lack of funding and training can leave people isolated and left to cope on their own with a disabling condition. Funding and respect for headache disorders is the key to improved quality of life for sufferers. #migraineawareness #believeyoucanbe #migraine #chronicpain #chronicpainawareness #headachedisorders #chronicallyliving #hemicraniacontinua #365blog #instadaily
