- Hence Therefore is the techno project of Simon Unwin and on his latest tape, Machine For Destroying Value, he’s got a distinctive take on the well-worn style. The beats are clearly restrained, efficient and minimal, but what you hear is far from bloodless eurodance. No, it’s big and full of power, like taut muscle was stretched over the metallic frame of the beats. He achieves this through ominous, ambient synths washing across the background, generous doses of reverb and even more generous effusions of bass.
...an attempt to navigate an uncertain reality where nature is at the same time all-encompassing, inescapable but also weird, alien and threatening. The echoes of this in Machine For Destroying Value become, kind of instinctively obvious: the libidinal pulse of the bass locked together with the clinical, machine-like beat; the disembodied creation of digital music inseparable from the sweaty pound of the dancefloor; the hedonistic pleasure of music inspired by the knowledge of imminent environmental catastrophe... this is a more interesting take on the idea than most; closer to a minimal techno version of Ben Frost.
Machine For Destroying Value is a “4ZZZ Pick” this week! Thankyou Brisbane babes.
