I do updates on production for Mythic Ocean on Twitter, but here’s a peak at some work. While this may look like an angry koosh ball this little guy is a sea urchin. Modeled in Blender, textured in Photoshop, and animated in Unreal Engine using a custom shader.
What the team calls the “Animated Toon Shader” is a material that distorts the XYZ WPO in order to animate some even wiggles. What we mostly use for fish I experimented with on the urchin to breathe a little bit of life into. The shader also has optional customizable RGB channels. This way I can make a photoshop texture with pure RGB colors (255) and then assign the colors I want in engine.
Why bother with all that when you can just color it however you want in photoshop? So that we save memory on a bunch of textures! Now if we want palette swaps we can simply change the color in engine rather than have to go back to a photoshop file and export a different texture for every variant.
Oh and all those triangles? UV mapping this very pointy geometric shape was a bit of a nightmare. I decided to break up each point and line them in rows so that the texture painting would be easier. Set up this way I didn’t have to worry about seams and making the texture was just a matter of painting a stripe pattern!
