Rough ideas for fashion-building. Fairly standard outfits of the middle-class of a prosperous city-state.
Thoughts thus far:
-It’s not that this level of fanciness isn’t formal, per se, but that formality includes a much broader range of contexts- casual wear is limited to private homes.
-Hats are, for most occasions, optional, and to be removed inside dwellings and shops.
-All fabrics can be assumed to be lightweight- think linen and silk, not wool- due to climate.
-“Harsh,” angular lines in fashion are considered foreign or counter-culture, esp. in outerwear.
-Some amount of cosmetic is standard regardless of gender.
-Men and women’s fashions follow distinct trends, and are not so similar as to be completely interchangeable, but androgyny is considered an attractive aesthetic quality and there’s no particular taboo against cross-dressing.
-It’s totally acceptable to remove layers, but you should ask your host first as it’s their duty to hang up your jacket.
-Removing shoes in a dwelling is polite but not obligatory, esp. if it would be difficult. The streets are remarkably clean, anyhow.
-Dressing so nicely that you appear noble is strongly faux-pas.
