This is one that is close to my heart. There is a huuuuge void in the world. Huge void. It pertains to the intersections of identity, spirituality, community, gender and sexuality. There is no representation of black queer people, period. Black Queer men and women are seen as something or a product that “cannot be sold”. The package is apparently “too complex”. Go figure. It is annoying. This definitely reduces the probability of seeing a queer black image in mainstream or anywhere really. That identity is pushed into the recesses of indie film produced by white boys with too much money and no concept of queer life. (Tangerine)The invisibility cast upon us is a violent act of erasure. If we all admitted that more than the binary exists, it would unravel EVERYTHING. People can’t even admit that more than 2 genders exist. …which robs a lot of people of a life in this society. Myself included. We are looked at as oddities and novelty at best. Something to be eradicated and fought against at worst. I don’t expect to see the normalization of my identity any time soon. I wish there was more. Which is why I am creating my own media with my artwork. I hate to put all the responsibility on Queer, black, non-binary folks, because we are dealing with so much already. Plus Queer black people are at the MOST RISK in this country and in the world. I am rebelling with my image and identity though. Because to be unapologetically black, queer, non-binary, African and indigenous is a revolutionary act. I am honestly glad mainstream media doesn’t believe I exist, like a mythological creature. #IamaUnicorn#3rdGender #GenderFluid
