Unless you're living somewhere under a rock, you're not without knowing that How To Make It In America season 2 started a few weeks ago. The series was rumored to end with the sophomore episodes, and as often, rumors are just rumors. You have probably enjoyed what you've seen so far, and you'll probably love even more the following episodes. But, do you really take the time to watch it like you should, with your own critics and everything ? If not, don't worry, you're just like everyone. You're just not like us. You see, we like to look for the tiny little details that could fuck up an episode, we're like that. Don't get it twisted though, we love the show.
I mean who doesn't... Alright, so, you have KiD CuDi in the fucking show, who does that ? The man probably is the chillest motherfucker on Earth besides Pharrell and the homie Gandhi. Aside from that, the main duo works out pretty well : the insolent dude to whom everything works out, and the stressed out man. Kind of a good cop / bad cop combination here. I don't want to sound creepy but you also have the cuties... That's so important man ! Can you name a show that worked out without the help of a beautiful lady ? I honestly don't think so. So, yes, you have all these elements, but why does the show works. Even with the best ingredients, you can mess a dinner up. We're going to see why in a few.
1 - Soundtrack ridiculously dope.
On a scale to zero to a hundred, how would you rate the importance of music ? To us, music in a show like that is just as important as images. Imagine for a few seconds the stop motion parts with some shitty teenager sounds. Duh. Not good at all. We love the ability that has the show to combine dope visuals with dope songs. It just makes you hyped as fuck, and that's what's up.
The selection of the songs is really important, and it was vital for a show focused on street hustle not to only feature rap songs... The Rolling Stones, Sharon Jones, Cam'ron, Richard Hell or a Tribe Called Quest, just to name a few. This really sounds like everyone's everyday playlist, doesn't it ? And we haven't mentionned the nice contribution from Aloe Blacc, that widely spread knowledge about the show, worldwide. « I need a dollar » is the theme song to tons of people today too... Subprimes where y'all at.
2 - Shot in NYC motherfucker
You would chose NYC too. The city has so much history... When it comes to mixing history, coolness, liberty, social classes struggles, and money, I don't really think you can find better of a spot. To some people, walking around in New York City is like being on a movie set. Being surrounded with eclectic, and yet, at the same time very similar people. It is really no surprise that the show's shot here. Let's face it, even with the depression we're all dealing with today, NYC is the coolest place. Which other city in the whole wild World could you possibly think of to represent freedom and liberty when you have a city where you can actually climb to the head of the Statue of Liberty. Tell us if you find, we'd like to be the pioneers to this city.
The story is pretty simple : two childhood friends want to grow a business together, to live the dream. They have no diplomas, but a lot of ambition. How do you make it in the coolest city on Earth ? That's something we've already seen somewhere. Oh right, Entourage. How To Make It In America is nothing less that the hipster, eastside version of Entourage. We're not going to point out the similarities one by one, you're big enough to understand. Besides that, the road to success/richesse/fame/titties is something that storytellers have always loved to narrate. It just touches everyone. From the Lower East Side to Brooklyn, from Manhattan all the way to the Bronx... And us people love to see how do regular people become « somebody ». Thank you Bryan De Palma for making Scarface, you've inspired generations.
Now, we're not totally sure that the simplicity of the plot is to be put on the "pros" side of the chart... A little more complexity is always enjoyable at some point, especially when the twists are that predictable. With the beginning of this season, we can clearly notice how Domingo took another dimension. Instead of seeing him 30 seconds here and there on the first season, he's now here on every episodes, dating Rachel (those boobies) and having this feud with Ben. Let's also focus on the smaller stories in the story. We're far from Inception here, but it's appreciable to be able to follow the lives of several people at a time. Rachel's career, Crisp's launch, Capo's troubles, Rasta Monsta... All of that is fitting the spirit, adding the value needed and pretty much making the show better.
