Stephen Lynch, Head Makeup Artist, “404 concerns some little mythical creatures named Douens. They are children, or child-like, but they’re also malevolent.”
Lucas Bryant, “The kid goblins needed some long scary claws and long scary clawed feet, and then long scary pointed teeth.”
Stephen Lynch, “We had several images, we all put things together, we got a photo someone had of Chuckie, someone had some Victorian cracked dolls etc. And then we thought, no let’s come up with our own thing - the challenge being that there’s not a whole lot of money, and we have very little time (there’s the issue of the kids having to go to school), and we have to be out in the woods, so we have to make something that’s comfortable and be able to slip on and off and they won’t cut themselves.”
Lucas Bryant, “And then there’s all these rules about kids … you know, because they’re just kids and they’re wimps, they can’t work like 90 hours straight … you can only work them for 14 hours and then you have to give them a sip of water or something so that really cuts down on all the things you can do - however, the energy that they bring is fantastic because they are so real and raw and fun, that it’s a great experience!”
Stephen Lynch, “I do like working with kids, if I get to officious I can get silly too. I like hanging out with kids, I’ll chase them around - we’ll let them know that they have a job to do but we can also have fun.. And really what’s more fun than bringing in a custom prosthetic hand with nasty claws. They love every minute. We very gently introduce this stuff - more often than not they’ve seen movies I haven’t even seen. They’re so used to it, they love zombies and gore. We treat them with kid gloves but, they’re into it.”
Steph Lynch - to kid actor trying on their douen teeth, “How about that? You want to keep them when you’re done?” Kid actor - immediately and with feeling, “Yes!” Stephen Lynch, “Not today, but next time. Custom teeth, why not?”
Mark Deveault, Special Effects Makeup, “My name is Mark Deveault, I own Deveault Effects, special effects makeup and character design, and I’m on Haven to do creatures! Talking with Stephen he had a colour-scheme and a look he had in mind, and I came up with the claws and the feet and the hands and all the rest of it, and now we’re going to mash it all up together. First thing is to have the exact size. And then out of that you need to do collapsable core, for the hands. The reason we’re making boots and gloves is that instead of glueing claws on them [the kids] - after the shots if they have to go to the bathroom, they eat, they scratch, they get excited - so instead of glueing, re-glueing, glueing, re-glueing…”
Lucas Bryant, “You know, everyone says that you shouldn’t work with children, or dogs. I don’t know why. Film set, TV set, as an actor you are highly controlled … they try to reign us in they try to cage me - they can’t really bottle this because I’m just a monster … but obviously you can’t get kids to adhere to those rules. It’s an added element of chaos.”
Stephen Lynch, “We have Lee Rose coming in to direct. Lee knows what she wants, she knows what she likes and what she doesn’t like. I like working with Lee because she’ll set you straight quite quickly.”
Mark Deveault, “I have six days to do everything, I can guarantee you there’s not going to be a whole lot of sleep.”
