Lesson 5
In this lesson the word 당신 and its usage is explained. 당신 means you in a formal way, BUT it is rarely used. Please know how and when to use this word, as it might get you into trouble when you use it wrong.
Usage:
When you are angry and do not mind fighting.
Translating from a foreign language and you must need a word for “you”.
Writing or singing a song or using indirect language.
Addressing your spouse.
Talking about someone who is not present in a honorific way and you want to say “he” or “she”.
Examples:
1. 당신 뭐야? = who do you think you are?! 2/3. 당신의 눈이 참 아름다워요 = your eyes are so beautiful 4. 당신 지금 어디예요? = (honey,) where are you? 5. this is so rarely used, an example would be useless. Just don’t use it.
Then how do you say “you”?
반말:
너 → 너는 → 넌
너 → 네가
존댓말: Use the name + suffix 씨
남준씨 = Namjoon → You’re addressing Namjoon in a formal way
존댓말: When you’re talking to an unknown person or someone with a status, use their postion/ job title + 님
기사님 = taxi driver → you’re addressing the taxi driver in a formal way
선생님 = teacher → you’re addressing the teacher in a formal way

If you watch kdrama’s or listen to kpop, you’ve probably heard the sentence 괜찮아다 so much you can already dream it. It means “it’s okay”, “don’t worry” or “it’s good”.
Present: 괜찮아요
Past: 괜찮았어요
Future: 괜찮을 거예요
