“VIVA TEXAS / VIVA DEEP ELLUM”
by Mexopolis
In 1994 Jorge R. Gutierrez and Sandra Equihua founded Mexopolis in Tijuana, Mexico, blending the latest digital techniques with their passion for over-the-top Mexican folk culture, to produce such award-winning animation as Nickelodeon’s El Tigre. Moving to Dallas, TX to work on Reel FX’s feature, The Book of Life, they quickly fell in love with the Deep Ellum neighborhood and in late 2015 painted this mural in July Alley at Crowdus Street. Outside the entrance to Reno’s biker saloon, Gutierrez called this mural a love letter to 1930s cartoons, certain that even the toughest crowd would “be really into it.” Within the span of just a few weeks in July, 2017, Mexopolis saw the beginning of the end for this mural as a door was cut into the middle of the wall; they installed an impressive new mural tribute to Deep Ellum; and Gutierrez and Equihua brought their time in the community to a close. @mexopolis @42murals
