B-24D The Mayflower by TK622 Via Flickr: B-24D S/N 42-40853 of the 64th Bomb Squad, 43rd Bomb Group, 5th Air Force. The Mayflower arrived as a replacement in the South West Pacific in July 1943. On July 17th the greenhouse nose was replaced with a Consolidated A6/A6A tail turret at the Townsville Air Depot in Australia. On 14 August 1943 the aircraft was flown to Port Moresby, New Guinea, where it was assigned to the 64th Bomb Squadron. It was part of the first batch of B-24 assigned to that Squadron after the B-17 was phased out. In October 1943 clothes were added to the previously nude pin up girl on the nose. Sometime in early 1944 the Mayflower was retired from combat missions, and eventually salvaged on 13 December 1944.

B-17E rare armed transport aircraft modification by TK622 Via Flickr: This B-17 is one of six ex 43rd Bomb Group B-17E converted into armed transport planes, used by the 54th Troop Carrier Wing, 5h Air Force. Six further B-17F were also converted. The conversions were done in late 1943. During the conversion the ball turret was removed, to avoid cargo parachutes getting caught on it, all other defensive armament was kept. The engines were overhauled and the bomb bay was reworked to house cargo bins and a steel cable for parachute static lines. These special cargo B-17 were used to supply front line troops in areas too dangerous for regular unarmed transport planes. The extensive armament also meant that besides dropping cargo the planes would often perform low level strafing runs against enemy positions as well. The crews flying these B-17 were mixed personal consisting out of former 43rd Bomb Group B-17 crews, Troop Carrier crews and aerial gunners borrowed from bomb groups stationed at the same airfields.
