I remember hunting and shooting my Dad’s old Marlin 1894 Saddle ring carbine growing up, but never owned anything in .44 Magnum or .44 Special until the past few years. I had been wanting a new revolver, but was unsure which route I would go… .357 magnum or .44 magnum were my main focus at the time. Ended up picking up a S&W 629 6.5” revolver. Shortly after that I decided to pick up a Henry all-weather in .44 magnum to customize for hunting and plinking. When it rains it pours so to speak, then not long after I ended up with a 2.5” Performance Center Revolver from S&W. All of these were sourced from Brownells of course.
Once I started down the road of .44 Magnum, what I quickly learned is that this is in fact one versatile caliber and I needed to start reloading for it. I began reloading for .44 Magnum since that was the main focus. Using Hodgdon H110 powder and Hornady 225gr FTX bullets I was able to load .44 magnum slightly under standard loads to make it more enjoyable to shoot, but I also noticed an accuracy advantage at least in the Henry rifle over the factory Hornady Leverevolution line of ammo. The 6.5” S&W 629 revolver is so pleasant to shoot these loads through, but once the 2.5” Performance Center revolver came into the fold, I quickly learned that .44 magnum is quite hard on the hand with that mall of a revolver. Enter .44 Special.
.44 Special is to .44 Magnum what .38 Special is to .357 Magnum. Basically it’s a shorter case than the magnum variant that holds less of a powder charge. Yes one can in fact load down .44 Magnum loads to .44 Special power and velocities, but that extra case volume can sometimes be an issue. For my particular .44 Special loads, I opted for some hard cast coated 240 gr projectiles and one good old Hodgdon Titegroup powder. I try and hit up Brownells for powder and primers whenever they have their free hazmat shipping available. Titgroup powder is a powder that I’ve been using in various pistol loads for years. The good and bad thing about it is that it goes a long way because very little powder is needed for loads. Extra case volume is also something that doesn’t seem to affect it. I’ve loaded everything from .38 Special to .45 ACP using this powder and I know it well. The disadvantage of this powder is that it’s much, much easier to overload a case, so one must take extra precaution not to overcharge when loading.
I’m truly kicking myself for not jumping into .44 Magnum & .44 Special much sooner than I have, but better late than never as they say. This versatile caliber is great for plinking, home defense, hunting and target shooting. I was able to harvest the largest buck I’ve ever taken with this caliber back in 2023 and it’s truly become one of my all time favorite calibers to date.
