While I’ve liked and learned about gyaru for years, I just figured out what 46 and 96 gal means 😭 

‘4′ in Japanese is pronounced as ‘shi’

‘9′ in Japanese is pronounced as ‘ku’

‘6′ in Japanese is pronounced as ‘ro’

So 46 sounds like ‘shiro’ which means white (gyaru who don’t tan).

And 96 sounds like ‘kuro’ which means black (gyaru who tan themselves, i.e. kuro gyaru, ganguro, and yamanba/manba)

I’ve seen people use #46gal and #96gal for years and had absolutely no idea what it meant. The more you know I guess 😭😭😭
