Gif Narratives
I am so excited to get to talk about gifs this weeks. Gifs are one of my favorite modes of expression and narratives. In 2013 my paper on SuperWhoLock gifs was published in Doctor Who: Fan Phenomena. SuperWhoLock is combining the tv shows Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock. Fans will combine gifs to create crossover narratives and publish their creations on Tumblr. It’s really cool because this universe that could never exist on television now exists on the internet in moving color.
Gifs also allow a close up study of film, television, and recordings that we were never been able to see before. As noted in the readings, you might be watching a movie and think “that will make a great gif.”
One of the things I found really interesting from the readings was the concept of selling gifs. All of my gif experience has been from the fandom side where paying for creations is taboo, except for fan art which gifs can be considered but I've never seen someone pay for it.
