The young male froze as an unfamiliar voice called out to him, he Instinctively raised his right hand towards his mouth before he remembered that he wasn’t a titan shifter anymore, not after Armin nearly… 

“N-no.” A wave of pain shot through his body as he spoke, he turned his head slightly to be able to look at the other with his remaining eye. “I need.. medicine.. for my uncle.” he lied with a hoarse voice. “Please, help.”

Balia whooped in excitement and hugged her abomasnow.

“Oh Arceus! Thank you Frosty! Didn’t know how I was going to break it to my granpa that i lost his gift to granma.” Balia stepped back from her pokemon and turned to the man beside her. She smiled brightly. All her annoyance from earlier gone like it didn’t exist.

“Ii should think so since we’d been looking for a while. Thank you for helping to look!”

Siegfried put a hand on his chest. ‘Scout’s honour.’ They would likely be found out for it eventually, because of how few in number the Survey Corps was, but he wouldn’t tell.

Jean smirked, his eyes dazzling at his newfound ally.

“Perfect. Now give me your sock full of rocks,” he demanded, taking it out of Siegfried’s hands. He tested it out with a twirl of his wrist, finding himself happy with the weight and speed.

“First one on the list is an idiot named Eren, and I’m gonna slap him silly with this.”

‘Depends on what you mean by special,’ Siegfried replied with a shrug. ‘I don’t draw, unlike you, and I can’t really cook either. Probably the one thing I was known for in the Garrison was the pranks I used to pull.’

He lifted the sock. ‘This? This is so I can lob it at things… or people who I need to get the attention of.’ He gave a sideways glance at Jean.

“Pranks, huh?”

Jean’s eyes began to sparkle with a dangerous glimmer, eyeing the sock in Siegfried’s hands. Maybe this superior wasn’t the stuck-up, rule-obeying goodie-goodie he so foolishly mistook him to be. He might even prove to be rather fun. In the very least, Jean was starting to see potential in Siegfried, and finally taking genuine interest in him.

“Well, what do you say we pull a few?”

It wasn’t. In fact, it had only intrigued Siegfried. How many other people did he know whose favourite foods were omelettes? Or who liked being alone, or sketching? Well- no, most everyone liked having alone time, didn’t they? A chance to sleep, or write, without having to talk to others.

He shook his head. ‘Omelettes? That’s quite interesting. What kind are they? Cheese?’

“‘Quite interesting’“? Jean scoffed. “You must not get around much. It’s not that impressive. And no, cheese makes me sick. It’s got meat in it, ham, with some herbs. My mom makes it really well--”

For a moment, he snapped out of that idle place a mind goes when someone prattles on about themselves, realizing he was spilling information to Siegfried was if they were actually friends.

“But that’s it. Again, it’s not that interesting.”

He was, and he swore to himself that he’d get the boy to talk about it somehow.

Lucky for Siegfried, Jean might become willing sooner rather than later.

Without further response from his superior, he turned around, completely dumbfounded.

“Does nothing make you angry?!” he snapped. “I’ve yelled at you, talked back to you, and yet you still insist on playing this loving, doting, big brother role?! Where do you get off?!”

Of course Jean would be cross that someone was showing him positive, healthy attention. That alone seemed to support the theory that he would much rather release his emotions through his fists than his mouth.

Siegfried sighed, feeling Jean fold his arms over the tears he had left on his sleeves. What a dilemma. One could go on saying nothing, but-

It would only make the pain hurt that much more.

Jean took Siegfried’s silence for a reluctant confirmation. His mind was made up.

“Well, good talk, but I assure you this won’t happen twice.”

He forced himself away from the cadet, smoothing out his clothes as if his minuscule meltdown never happened.

“Thanks for the paint set. We’ll never speak of this little counseling session again, understand?”

He had some gall making a comment like that to someone who was technically his superior, but he would rather be scolded for stepping out of line than be held through what he considered a moment of weakness.
