🤔 Can I interrupt your 4th of July celebration for just a minute? 🎆 Are you up for a quick history lesson? 📚 ☑️ July 4, 1776: America 🇺🇸 becomes independent from England 🇬🇧. 🚫 July 4, 1776: Enslaved Africans and their descendants, who were kidnapped or purchased and brought to America, are still being raped, beaten, mutilated, killed and picking that good ol' cotton right here in the land of the free and home of the brave! "Independence Day" for enslaved Black folk in America didn't come for another 89 years, when the last slaves in Galveston, Texas were "freed" June, 19 1865 ➡️ Juneteenth. However, chattel slavery wasn't legally abolished throughout the entire United States until the 13th Amendment was ratified in December of 1865. And those formerly enslaved did not truly receive US citizenship until more than two years later in the summer of 1868, with the passage of the 14th Amendment. On July 5, 1852 former slave, orator, writer and abolitionist Frederick Douglass gave a speech at an Independence Day celebration. "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?" he asked. 🤔 "I say it with a sad sense of the disparity between us." "Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us." "The rich inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity and independence, bequeathed by your fathers, is shared by you, not by me." "The sunlight that brought light and healing to you, has brought stripes and death to me." "This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn..." More than 150 years later, we're still fighting many of the same racial inequities and social injustices he challenged. So I'm sorry, if I don't feel much like celebrating. The words of Frederick Douglass still ring just as true today as they did when he first spoke them. So no, I didn't fire 🔥 up the grill today. And I won't be lighting up any fireworks 🎇 tonight. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I won't be in a celebratory mood on this day in American history until the disparities that Frederick Douglass spoke about are dismantled throughout this nation for good!
