dance for one
no one warned me that falling in love with a dancer was like realising you were starving for something you couldn’t taste, dying for a crash in the broken spine of a highway drowned in stars and golden streetlights. but it’s not all like that - fingers outstretched for something, a dusty secret cradled in the wings of my ribs - it’s more imperfect, a little messy. i am the cold palms on a window white with condensation, ugly smears of paint and heartbreak on your shirt; two sizes too big when you curl your shoulders and tell me it’s a pas de deux, a pirouette of knuckles over my collarbone. but i am also the falling stone, unbuoyed by guarantee and forever afraid that you, with dreams tattooed into the nape of your neck, you with a dance like moonshine slipping into the cracks on that same forgotten highway, reaches for a yearning that empties us both until i can’t give any more. that you will see i am still the line of footprints on stained linoleum, a world you choose to leave behind in that search that never ends. no one warned me that falling in love with a dancer was asking for disaster when i’ve only just learned to fix, life when i’ve finally reconciled with death, a love i can never have. that’s what it is, at the very bones.
