The game before ours set a high bar for excitement, I didn't hear the final but I think the third period was like the first two.
Our game was thankfully different, those really lopsided ones are less fun no matter which side you're on.
But we started out playing like we were maybe heading that way, the defense had a couple breakdowns early, and not even the pair that had a sub playing. I failed to make good saves to back them up and we were down 0-2 what sure seemed pretty quickly. But after that things started to improve, I made some saves and we got going offensively with a couple pretty nice goals to be tied after the first period.
I played better going into the second but about halfway through the period our subs combined to give the puck away instead of clearing the zone and I messed my angles up and they were able to put the shot in to take the lead back. But not too much later our fastest skater got a breakaway and scored and then we had a great passing play that lead to an easy tap into an empty net to take the lead in the game after two periods, 4-3.
The third period was pretty even and back and forth though we were getting a few more shots and actually got to more for the game than we'd allowed. But then there was a play behind our net and the puck came loose to an uncovered guy on their team who got a quick shot off that I wasn't able to get across in time to stop. I thought we were tied again but one of the refs called the goal off and said they had a player in the crease. I honestly was looking to the side and then tried to get across and didn't notice anything but the other team didn't seem too horribly upset about the call even though the goal would have tied the game so maybe it really happened, or maybe the ref didn't want to stay for overtime, I don't know.
They kept pushing to score after that one was called back and had a great chance when our defense messed up a bit and left one of their guys open in front and they managed to get a pass to him. I came out and got my angle the best I could and waited until he shot and got my blocker on it and deflected it to the corner. We got control of the puck a bit later and went the other way to complete a hat trick for the game by one of our wings who usually does not score much, so she was very happy even with the third goal being into an empty net with their goalie pulled.
At that point we pretty much had the game won with about a minute left but they still managed to get off one more pretty good shot I stopped with my left leg and then the time ran out and we got a nice 5-3 come from behind win.
