Brick Club 5.8.3, 5.8.4
“He was, upon his own demand and through his own complicity, driven in succession from every happiness; and he had this misery that after having lost Cosette wholly in one day, he had been obliged afterwards to lose her again little by little.” The words ‘complicity’ and ‘obliged’ are doing a lot of work here. Do you think Cosette believes she’s lost her father? Because she had the gall to get married? And there’s only room for one male figure of authority in her life?
The idea that Valjean sings Marius’s praises as a tactic to keep Cosette’s attention is hilarious. And Marius moving around the furniture to spite Valjean is even better. These two are being so unnecessarily petty about each other, it’s ridiculous and exactly what I would expect of both of them. Marius is only acting in response to what Valjean specifically told him was what he wanted and now Valjean seems flabbergasted that Marius is taking his words to heart. Maybe Marius just finds it absurd that his father-in-law, a convict though he might be, will only meet his daughter by furtively sneaking in the basement every day and he really ought to just come in the front door if he’s going to visit at all. No wonder he’s suspicious about the money, Valjean went from living as a respectable gentleman for over a decade to hiding in the basement under cover of night and talking about how dangerous he was to have around. And now he’s secretly talking up Marius to his wife? I’d be looking for an angle too!
God! Just let him visit Cosette in a parlor or something! This is very broke-into-people’s-houses-to-leave-money Valjean. Sometimes the symbolism of the act means more to Valjean than the outcome, good or bad, of the act itself. “You would have said that even while wishing to reach some destination, he dreaded the moment when he should be near it.”
I wish Valjean was selfish. I wish he had admitted his past to Marius, still wanting the truth to be laid out, but remained a part of Cosette’s life just more removed (which I really don’t think Marius would have been diametrically opposed to) basically only refusing their offer of rooms in Gillenormand’s house. Then the final chunk of the book could have been the tension of keeping secrets from Cosette and the character growth of Marius learning to not be a judgmental bourgeois. Cosette could have been increasingly upset that she was obviously being lied to and Marius would have slowly turned to her side as he learned more about Valjean. And it slowly comes to a head when Valjean begins to get ill and Marius thinks he needs to tell Cosette everything but Valjean continues to insist he be separate from the new couple. And the reveal that Valjean saved Marius would be even sweeter and Marius would reveal the whole truth to Cosette and then they still have a beautiful and tearful reunion with Valjean. And Marius gains class consciousness as he was always meant to.

They Recall the Garden of the Rue Plumet
One day in the spring, Marius and Cosette decide to go back to visit the garden in the Rue Plumet. They stay all afternoon, and Cosette is not back in time to see Valjean.
The next day, Valjean questions her about their finances and asks why she doesn’t have nicer things, like her own carriage. Valjean starts staying longer and longer, but then the fire stops being lit when he arrives. Marius comments to Cosette that they could survive without Valjean’s money. The next day, there are no chairs in the cellar room. The day after that, Valjean no longer comes. When Cosette sends Nicolette to ask after his health, he says that he’s preparing for a little journey.

In which I get very frustrated with Marius and the passive aggressive “make the room uncomfortable” games. Just grow up and have a conversation already.
Going to the Rue Plumet is a nice callback to last year, I suppose, but Vicky really twists the knife by framing it as ‘gratitude’ to the place--in what I take to be a deliberate contrast with how JVJ is treated.
It’s weird how everyone seems both really in character and really out of it right here.
Marius is being passive aggressive instead of saying what he’s thinking, sure. Also being a bit of a condescending tyrant, wtf.
JVJ lying to his own detriment in order to protect (or “protect”) others, I can see it. Still not happy about it. And rather wish he’d used some of his willingness to bend the truth to make a plausible reason for his absence(s) instead of never explaining anything to Cosette. The encouragement to live more extravagantly feels out of place--it certainly relates to the ‘Marius is suspicious of Cosette’s dowry’ thing, but it feels weird for highly-frugal and retiring JVJ to place so much importance on status markers he excluded from their lives. One the on hand, I can see it because JVJ wanting Cosette comfortable/happy, and wanting her situation (money and all) accepted. And that depriving her of those things earlier tied into a whole slew of other concerns (his penitential lifestyle, maintaining a low profile) which are no longer in play regarding Cosette. But it still feels weird to see him placing so much value on things he never previously seemed to care about.
Cosette...ok, we don’t get as much time listening to her voice early on (versus seeing other characters think about her), but since her engagement she’s come across as more child-like and credulous than she did as an actual child. Her speech towards Marius and JVJ falls again and again into wheedling pseudo-tantrums, and I just don’t like or buy it. I’ll cut her some slack in that the two men with power over her life are concealing some major information from her, and playing the brat may be an intentional strategy to cope with that, but Hugo’s on some thin ice.
The kids tutoyer, of course, and Cosette & JVJ are firmly in ‘vous’ territory.
they are really making it more and more cruel for alexia when she finds out.
Brickclub 5.8.3
So, in a bit less than 3 months, Cosette basically forgets that she loves her dad (except when she doesn't); Marius (or someone in the house... but honestly, who else?) starts passive-aggressively pushing JVJ out with furniture and fireplace shenanigans; and JVJ pretends to be responsible for the last because he'd rather lie to the person he loves most of all than actually answer her questions.
Grah. There's a reason I don't remember much of the post-Barricade plot, and I think it's because it's very frustrating, and I hate how all the characters I like are either dead or have become this.
JVJ and Cosette continue to use 'vous' with eachother, Marius and Cosette use 'tu'.
Brick!Club 5.8.1-4 In Which everything is Depressing
5.8.1
This man is your father-in-law, he's meeting with your wife and you have them meeting in a cellar?
Tranquil dust. This is depressing.
Not eating or sleeping... Valjean. Why?
Valjean what are you doing? Listen to Cosette. This is making me sad. And then being all formal.
Cosette you have the right to wonder what he's doing.
Why can't they actually talk to her?!?
"You no longer need a father, you have a husband."
Cosette became angry.
"I no longer need a father! One really does not know what to say to things like that, which are not common sense!"
Yes! This is sense. And she's hitting close to the mark.
And then he flees. Arg.
5.8.2
Why isn't anyone seriously questioning this? Merely an eccentric? This man is needlessly punishing himself and his son-in-law is an idiot! Okay, true it's not something someone would easily guess but the fact that Marius makes himself scarce... in addition to the whole room thing? That's not suspicious?
And the separation stuff is working? Toussaint leaving? * sighs *
And Cosette is still wondering in the dark. Poor girl.
Brick!Club 5.8.3
Sad. That badly describes what I'm feeling at the beginning of this chapter. It's downright depressing. He's suffering. Yes, it's his fault but it doesn't make it less sad.
And then she misses a meeting. :-(
And apparently money is not being spent... mysterious.
They talk about Marius. That just seems wrongish.
Especially since I suspect Marius has done nothing to encourage the visits...
The lack of fire... and the chairs...*sighs *
And Valjean is putting details together about the money and these “subtle” hints.
And taking the blame for Marius's hints on himself.
And cutting short the visits... his happiness.
These men are strange creatures... why are they acting so frustratingly?
And now he's separating himself completely.. can't there be some sort of happy ending? Is that too much to hope for in a book?
5.8.4
I have nothing to say... this is just depressing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So some overall thoughts. First of all I'm still not really happy with Valjean and Marius. The pain they're wrecking on Cosette and Valjean. It's just... as I've said mutiple times, sad and depressing. I know it's a period of months but would Cosette really forget her father like that so easily? Especially since he had been her life practically before that point. I wonder.
I also wonder whether Cosette and Marius are actually connecting at all with the outside world? Because that's something important and it doesn't appear to be happening?
I know that there are happy things that I won't get from this book... I was a musical fan first... but I'm hoping for some not sad stuff as this is winding up.
