This book is based in Oakland, 2013. It’s a true story of two teenagers that were involved in a crime that changed their lives for the worse.
Don’t worry, no spoilers coming. This is all MOSTLY on the back cover.
Sasha, a non-binary teenager, was minding their own business on a typical bus ride home when Richard, an African-American teenager, was persuaded by a couple of his buddies to light their skirt on fire. Little did he know what he was getting into.
You’re probably thinking.. why does it matter if they’re non-binary or if he’s African-American. What’s the point in pointing it out? To answer your question, Richard’s stupid act was considered a hate crime due to the police falsifying his story, and him loosely throwing around the term “homophobic” even though he thought it meant not liking men, and only girls. Since he is African-American, he joins the 70% of young African-American males that make up for most of the detention center’s population.
I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It’s a quick read, and I think it’ll be a real eye-opener to their being more than three basic sexualities. It’ll also open your eyes to how poorly young black men are being treated within the courts.
